Derided by some for his apparently cocky nature and colourful clothing, the criticism has often overlooked his ability to squeeze the most from his game. In addition to that dedication is a career curve that has always moved upwards - from European Tour success, through solid seasons on the PGA Tour to highly accomplished Ryder Cup appearances. He's also won both versions of the World Matchplay title in the last couple of seasons - the WGC in Arizona last year and the recent Volvo event in Spain. He's had numerous top 20s in the majors over the last five years and went closest to victory when holing a great putt on the 18th at Birkdale to post the clubhouse lead only for Padraig Harrington to catch him. That showed that if he can get himself into position, the Englishman has the courage and self-belief to get the job done. And, of course, if he could take victory at Congressional, imagine how many new followers that would get him on Twitter!
