The German has enjoyed a glorious last 12 months, banking a first major title when winning the PGA Championship and also hitting top spot in the world rankings at the age of just 26. He had warmed up for that play-off win at Whistling Straits with an eighth in the US Open at Pebble Beach and a seventh at St Andrews so it came as no surprise to many that his unflappable character, solid all round game and brilliant putting should combine for a first major title. His ability to chalk up wins is hugely impressive and a big reason why he hit top spot in the rankings but there is one stat which could just count against him in this event. Kaymer has a major, nine European Tour events, two Challenge Tour titles and six EPD Tour tournaments to his credit. But never has he taken victory with a score below 11-under-par. The US Open has only once been won in double digits under par so perhaps the lack of birdies on offer could negate some of his powers.
