The Korean is all too easy to overlook on the big occasion and yet he has consistently proved himself more than capable of contending - thus far he has just struggled to turn promising situations into winning ones as his compatriot YE Yang did in last year's USPGA Championship. Although he missed the cut at Turnberry last year, in both of the previous years he played very well in the Open. He was third with 18 holes to play at Carnoustie and second heading into the final round at Royal Birkdale. Earlier this year he was briefly in the box seat at Augusta only for one errant shot and a resurgent Phil Mickelson to halt his challenge. Originally a weightlifter, he didn't take up golf until the age of 16 and remarkably didn't break par before he was 21. That late start has actually aided his career, making him a more determined, dogged character. Don't discount the inspiration of Yang's win or his considerable competitive instinct.
