"In beating Tom Watson, Stewart Cink became the villain." "Cink the unpopular champion." So said the headlines 12 months ago when Cink defeated 59-year-old Tom Watson in a play-off at Turnberry, thus foiling the greatest story of Open Championship history. It was a little unfair to say the least. Watson himself was sanguine about one thing - he had been given the chance to win and he blew it. When Cink had his opportunity, he grabbed it. More to the point, on the final day when Watson, Westwood and Wood all bogied the 18th hole, Cink birdied it - not just the once but twice, in regulation play and also in the extra holes. For some it was a surprise that Cink did well in the Open but he had finished sixth two years earlier at Carnoustie. His form this year has been average but he was eighth at Muirfield Village. He's unlikely to defend his title, but he's well capable of playing well this week.
