When Garcia closed 2008 with two wins he had Tiger Woods' top spot in the World Rankings in his sights. But 2009 has been a disappointment, mainly because his old problems with the putter continue. He remains an imperious ball-striker who is frequently referred to by his fellow players as the best in the world from tee-to-green. It seems inconceivable that he will fail to win a Major, but his recent near misses at the 2007 Open and 2008 PGA have to be a concern. He insists that they are encouraging and prove he is close to that elusive win. But outsiders wonder if the near misses might be as close as he gets. It doesn't appear to have helped that in both events he had to watch fellow European Padraig Harrington take the plaudits. His hopes of breaking the Major duck at Augusta seem fatally flawed by that wonky putter. You have to question his chances when you consider that he has broken par only once in his last 17 rounds in the Masters.
