Last summer the Vijay Singh of old returned as he collected three titles in just five weeks. It was a reminder of what a machine he could be when on top form: long driving, relentless iron play and a fierce will to win. But was it a last hurrah? He was 46 in February and hasn't made the top 20 in a strokeplay event since that run of form ended in August. Indeed, this year the only time he has broken the top 50 of a strokeplay event is when finishing 27th in a 33-man field in Hawaii. Since winning the Masters in 2000 he has been ruthlessly consistent at Augusta, never once finishing outside the top 20, but the suspicion lingers that his win was aided by the heavy rain which slowed the greens down. Only Padraig Harrington comes close to Singh's work-rate so we know he will be working hard to improve his form but the best years may be behind him.
