Tiger Woods has still not broken 70 in his first round at the Masters after toiling to a level par 72 on Thursday.
The World number one had 12 straight pars before making a bogey six at 13, hitting a four-iron approach too long, hitting a chip which rolled back off the green and failing to get up and down.
He then dropped another shot at the next after driving into the trees, but bounced back at 15 when he chipped in from 25 feet for an eagle three.
He then missed makeable birdie putts at 16 and 18 and had to settle for a level-par round.
"I just didn't get anything going my way today," the four-time champion said.
"At 13 I hit a sweet approach shot that I thought was perfect, then I ended up with the worst place you could have put it. At 15, it was an easy little chip uphill - just had to make sure it carried enough.
"You don't really shoot low rounds here any more, though. You just plod along - it's playing more like a US Open.
"I only heard one roar and that was for Poulter's eagle. Other than that it was quiet."
Despite a poor day by the standards of a man who has won nine of his last 11 tournaments, Woods' rivals should not be celebrating just yet. In 2005 he shot an opening 74 and went on to win his fourth Green Jacket.
