Mickelson will assume top spot for the first time in his career if he can clinch a third Green Jacket and Woods finishes outside the top five at the first major of the season.
The gulf between the duo shrank rapidly following Woods' eight-month injury lay-off following reconstructive knee surgery after last year's US Open.
However, Tiger's victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks ago - in just his third event back - ensured Mickelson was denied the opportunity to usurp the number one spot at last week's Houston Open.
In the event Lefty produced a poor display in Texas, missing the halfway cut after rounds of 77 and 76.
Sergio Garcia also had the chance to knock Woods off his perch at the WGC-CA Championship last month, but the Spaniard could not produce the result he needed at Doral and is now too far back to catch Woods at Augusta this week.
