Trevor Immelman says he has had a 'tremendous year' as Masters champion, as he begins the defence of his title at Augusta on Thursday.
Immelman became the first South African Masters winner in 30 years with his three-shot victory at Augusta National 12 months ago.
The 29-year-old has been in a whirlwind ever since and admits he has had a surreal year since putting on the famous green jacket.
As he now prepares to defend his Masters title, Immelman admits he was not prepared for the interest in him after his victory last year.
"It's been a surreal experience," Immelman said. "I don't think I was aware or prepared for what happened.
Issues
"It's all good stuff but there are a lot of issues that you have to deal with. It took me a little time to become accustomed to that but it's been great fun.
"My family and I really have had a great time and I've been able to experience and have some great opportunities.
"Overall, it's been a tremendous year; the greatest year of my career from a standpoint of getting to be able to experience things and learn a lot about myself at the same time.
"I think you get to realise where your comfort levels are and learning how to deal with it when you're out of your comfort zone. It's something that I wouldn't trade for anything. It really has been a great eye-opener."
Immelman gained a special thrill on a visit back to Augusta National a month ago.
Locker
"That was the first time I went back there since last April and I saw my name up on the locker," he said. "And meeting some of the past champions has been great fun."
Immelman will tee-off his title defence in the third-to-last group in the first round on Thursday, alongside Australian Adam Scott and talented New Zealand amateur Danny Lee.
He admitted he will be going through all the emotions when he is introduced as defending champion on the first tee.
"I'm going to be nervous and excited and anxious and everything all at the same time.
"I've been announced as the Masters champion a few times, and every time it's goose bump stuff, just an absolutely incredible feeling."
