McIlroy is a major champion in the making and if he addresses all of the facets he needs to achieve that then I can see him winning one by the age of 23 or 24. In fact, I'd be amazed if he isn't contending for majors this season.

At the Dubai Desert Classic, a superstar was born.
As I watched Rory McIlroy's run of five straight birdies from the ninth on the final day, I got the feeling I was watching somebody who is soon going to emerge as one of the best players in the world, if he isn't already.
But that final round was certainly a rollercoaster of emotions. He'd played so brilliantly for the first three days and the last thing you wanted to see was him throw it away - but he so nearly did.
He'd effectively won the tournament by establishing a six-shot lead, then he struggled around five, six and seven so on the back nine he had to win it all over again and that run of birdies put it back in his hands.
Then it seemed that somebody turned on the panic mode again with some poor club choices at 15 and 16, a poor tee-shot at 17 and coming up the last you wondered if this was going to be a disaster of Jean Van de Velde proportions.
I thought his lay-up at 18 was probably too close to the green, and to his horror he then he played it long and landed in the back trap.
But he managed to come up with a bunker shot that will undoubtedly win Shot of the Month and will be a contender for Shot of the Year. Anything over-hit would have gone in the water and the tournament would have gone to Justin Rose, but he came up with an absolute gem.
Learn
On reflection, if he had strolled through that last day and won by five or six shots he wouldn't have learned as much as he did by throwing those shots away. He now knows that when he is faced with the ultimate test he can come through it.
It was a fabulous victory, one that moves him into the top 20 in the world, and quite simply he has established himself as the best young player in the world of golf - potentially better than Camilo Villegas and Anthony Kim.
At just 19 years of age he is still getting stronger, fitter and is gaining length all the time. He seems to be 10 yards longer now than he was this time last year and I do love the way he swings a golf club.
He first came to my attention at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2007 when he needed to birdie the 18th to get enough money together to get his card. He managed to pull it off and I can't believe how far he has come since then.
Perhaps the comparisons with Tiger Woods are a little premature, but it was lovely to hear the words of Tiger's close friend Mark O'Meara. He has no reason to heap praise on McIlroy, but he said the Irishman swings the club better than Tiger did at the age of 19 - and that is a huge compliment.
He is the real deal, he's got the full package. His bunker play seems exceptionally good, his pitching is good and his long game is world class. He's also a charming, endearing young man off the course and his arrival on the world stage will be greatly appreciated.
If you were to be hyper-critical, the element of his game that he needs to master is playing out of the thick fringes around the greens; I think he can improve his technique playing out of the longer grass.
Greatness
It's hard to find any aspect of his game that is weak, but I'm sure Rory will be hyper-critical because he's not yet in the place he wants to be. This is a young man who is getting better but doesn't feel he is anywhere near his best and will leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of greatness.
He doesn't just want to be a tournament winner. He is a major champion in the making and if he addresses all of the facets he needs to achieve that then I can see him winning one by the age of 23 or 24. In fact, I'd be amazed if he isn't contending for majors this season.
I expect him to be a multiple winner this year and I genuinely believe he could win the Race to Dubai. This kid can hit all the shots, there's very little missing and I'm expecting big things from him.
And with the Ryder Cup back on the agenda again I can't see any way that Rory won't be in Colin Montgomerie's team at Celtic Manor. In fact, you can put your house on that.
So far, the school report for Rory McIlroy is simple: Best in Class.

When was the last British to win a Major? Make it more specific -when was the last Northern Irishman to win one? Most of us are not even born yet let alone knowing. Mr. Fred Daly won The Open in 1947, 62 years ago, and the only Northern Irishman to have done it Rory, it is up to you to increase the tally. Records are made to be broken

Hi Mark, All the Respect I have had for Tiger as #1 and Padraig as the Irish Star have now become one for Rory, this guy is going to be big, he will have more majors under his belt then cars and I'm sure he will achieve personal goals he has set in his life... One little problem, I think the Media will put alot of pressure on this player and this can make or break players, Another aspect in Irish Golf is that young club members will need to be treated like adults and this will create more pro's. In my local club when I was playing underage I was never aloud to claim 1st Prize as there was a club role you had to be over 18 etc... This is what made me turn my dreams down the drain as becoming a Pro. Point is we need to support Rory all the way

This boy has talent to burn but we should not place the world of expectation on him just yet. Yes he has a lovely flowing swing with great tempo, but I am not sure it would stick up to the test of coming down a majors back nine with a lead. He needs to mature and tighten up a little, and his putting and course management still needs some work. Rory, at the moment just play and enjoy yourself. The world is your oyster, just don't rush it. In the meantime we will enjoy watching you.

first of all, rory is not british nor does he wish to be. he's as irish as a leprechaun. just like eddie irvine wasn't british but you tried to claim him anyway. and because of that he will flourish. the british media single handedly destroy their own prodigious sporting talents time after time but thankfully both the irish media and supporters actually support their own instead of pressurising their careers into oblivion......

Sky coverage of golf is excellent but I have a few comments which I believe could improve the information they give at end of day 2 and start of day 3. We all have our heroes. Could you spend just a few seconds giving those without internet all the qualifiers at the end of 2 days. Secondly could you then give the scores of all the players who qualify in your scores update. It may only take an additional minute to updater the scores of all of the qualifiers rather than repeating the advert asking who was the oldest winner/who has won most eurotour tournaments/ etc. Many thanks

I watched the South African open and the African open and not only do Northern Ireland have the brilliant young Rory McIlroy they also have Gareth Maybin who just missed out in a play off he shouldn't have been in ,and a resurgent Michael Hoey who also led the Sa Open at one stage before admitting to me at the recorders hut that he "ran out of steam" there is another young fellow Jonathan Caldwell to watch out for and not to mention the vast experience of Graham Mcdowell and Darren Clarke!(who nearly won the African open) In my opinion the other Southern Irish guys are going to have a fight on their hands this year to outdo the Ulstermen! ok maybe Harrington,I just have this strange feeling it's time for the young Ulstermen to take the reins and they have the undoubted talent to make history just like the recent stars of Irish golf, the Rafferty's ,Feherty's and Clarkes ! If only they had kept the Dunhill cup at Saint Andrews as a team event we.(I'm living in Africa but I'll always be an Ulsterman) well we would be favourites! Ok so maybe I'd let Sweden be favourites that would suit us! I hope I don't offend you Mark but us Irish are gonna wip you English boys this year and at the Rugby too! hehe just having a laugh (at your expense) anyhow keep up the bloggs Mark and tell Ewen Murray that we all look forward to the end of his"sabatical" I shall be at Loch Lomond this year cheering on the Irish!

i caddied 20years ago on the European tour and have seen good young players that just did'nt push on through to the big league, however Rory is definetly a little bit special, Darren Clarke was good at Rory's age but the difference is, Rory is a more flowing, natural player and has the temperment of a guy 10 years older. I would and just might put my life's savings on him winning a major by the age or 25. A cert bet i would say. Tony Mc Keown, Dungarvan, Ireland.

Fari play to Rory - he's been knocking on the door for a while now but showed great character to pull off the win. Many golfers could have lost it when the bogies started kicking in on the back nine but he came through it which will stand to him next time he's in a winning position. Not sure if he's the next Tiger Woods or not (time will tell) but he's definitely going to be pushing Harrington and Clarke for the title of "best Irish golfer".

I first came across Rory when he was 12 years old and played against him in a club competition in Northern Ireland. I was 6 years his senior this stage and we all could tell he way pretty special then. Even at this age he had all the shots.........including an unbelievable flop shot over a 100 year old tree! He deserves all the support and praise he's getting but the media shouldn't put too much pressure on him. I have no doubt he will be challenging Tiger soon.......what an unbelievable duel that would be! Oh, and just to let you know, he demolished me 8 & 6 back then!

Mcllroy has been a prodigous talent for some time, he was off plus 6 when he turned pro. In comparison, Mickelson and Els were both off plus 2 / 3. That shows the quality this boy has. I hope he wins every major during his career. He's the british Sergio, a breath of fresh air for young golf followers, c,mon Rory !!!

Hi Mark, I am delighetd for Rory as he has come so close to winning in the last few months, he looks as if he is going to grow into a great player, his iron play was sublime always going straight for the flag, his driving was also immense. I do feel that his putting wasn't as consistent as the rest of his game but in saying that he still made a lot of birdies. I do think that America will suit his game and I expect to see him in the top twenty at the Masters, that would be a more realistic goal. I think Monty has the most free flowing swing in the game so I was delighted to see him playing well again, hopefully he can get back into the top 50 and win a few more tournaments. Would also like to see Darren Clarke pick up teh pace again a bit, I would say his confidence took a massive hit when he didn't make the Ryder cup team last year after winning the KLM Open. Mark I would be interested in who you think will win this years majors, I expect Tiger to win 2- US Masters & US PGA & I think Harrington will get the impossible three in a row at the Open Championship, not sure though for the US Open, maybe Sergio's time is now!!

Hi Mark, what a fantastic event, what a fantastic winner. Some of the most precise driving and iron play i've witnessed for many years, and at 19 years of age! Fantastic for the Tour and fantastic for a re-born Monty. He's mellowed more in the last 7 days then in the last 10 years. The Pressure' s off Field Marshall Montgomerie and he's enjoying his golf and its great to see. The interviews with him were refreshing and with Kaymer, Mcilroy and Quiros we've got the young blood Monty needs to give the senior players a wake up call for 2010. Great to see Justin Rose back to somewhere near his best after a poor season last year by his standards. Mcilroy's a natural, i get the impression the fundamentals of the game come easy to him, free flowing, doesn't hang about and excites the fans. More of the same please!

Let the boy win a major trophy, he is still a light weight in the world of golf.........You can't compare him to Tiger by a long shot........He is the another of those Andy Murray type, tooo much media praise but less potential. Let time tell
