Is Tiger the greatest?

Join the debate over whether Tiger Woods' US Open win sees him rate as the best of all time

Tiger Woods' triumph at Torrey Pines sees him move to within four of Jack Nicklaus' all-time record of major wins.

Woods battled over 91 holes of a tough US Open course, suffering with a bad knee to claim his 14th major title. Does this rate as Tiger's greatest victory?

Can he now lay claim to the title of the greatest golfer ever to play the game?

Is it inevitable he will overtake Nicklaus' record of major triumphs? If so, how long do you think it will take before he sets a new mark of his own?

Sme fools do fail to realize what tiger has acheived in a short period of time...Jack is the greatest player..But only for the next 10-15 yrs will he b considered so... Tiger's biggest strength is his ability to do the unthinkable when one might feel he is done & dusted...Smethg no one else can counter against or even had that quality.... Jack had the style but doesn't have that a-game to challenge tiger...One really doesn't expect jack to drive a 650 yard par5 in two nor to hold a 30+ft putt to win a tournament.... For those fools who still questions tiger..Pls try out sme of his magical shots if u do have the chance to play glof...Then try to comment on him..His dedication & hardwork is unrivalled in all of sports

I can't believe people are suggesting that Tiger has no competition for majors. The fact is that he makes the rest look average but there have been and still are great golfers he is beating with ease. Singh, Els, Mickelson, Olazabal to name but a few. Golf has never been so competitive and is arguably the most competitive individual men's sport in the world alongside tennis. It's just that the like of Woods in golf, Federer in tennis don't come along very often. The number of majors doesn't matter, Woods is not only the greatest ever, but he changed the face of men's golf by being a great athlete as well as a golfer and an icon that changed the whole image of the game. He is the Muhammed Ali of golf, and no one argues that Ali wasn't the best ever based on the number of belts he's won.

I would just like to make two points. Firstly in response to Jon Moody (posted 17/6 22:57) - The fact that the mentioned Palmer, Watson, Player and Trevino won 30 majors between them, could this be attributed to the fact that Nicklaus did not dominate them as Tiger has to Els, Singh, Mickelson and co. Els and co would have most likely won a greater number of majors between them in any other era possibly even stealing some of Nicklaus' majors however such is the dominance of Tiger that they have failed. Also in response to Pat Scanlan (posted 15/6 16:21) The argument of technology is a poor one. Jack Nicklaus' equipment was far superior to those that preceeded him as well. Does the same argument then apply? And also why aren't younger players with access to the best equipment available able to beat Tiger? The fact that one player has been so dominant over another group of full time professionals who have access to the latest technology, training aides, analysis etc put Tiger head and shoulders above the rest. Nicklaus although great never dominated his peers as Tiger has (and they are not 24 handicap hackers)

Absolutely gutted Tiger won't be competing again this year. That's the Setanta subscription down the drain. If he's not at the tournament, I simply don't watch it. Why? Because without him you know it's a second rate event. No more Tiger tour for 2008. I drove up from Cornwall to watch him play in the World Matchplay at Wentworth a couple of years - he got knocked out. When I arrived Luke Donald and Adam Scott were on the 4th green surrounded by about 50 spectators. When we got to the second green there were literally thousands of people gathered around to watch Tiger. Says it all really - I bet the tv stations and event organisers are drowning their sorrows in the 19th as we speak. The rest of the year just won't be the same.

Keith Norman says...

During the US Open, Woods tapped in a putt on the 16th ( I think), with the end of his putter. A few weeks ago I did the same and was given a 2 shot penalty because I didn't use the face or rear edge of the putter ! Did he use the end, and if so why was he not penalised ? He would not have won had this been the case ! Keith Norman.

Dan Clancy says...

Tiger Woods is undoubtably the greatest golfer to ever grace this world. He is the brilliant, his game is almost perfect. People are always saying he cannot hit fairways, he may not hit as many as someone like Nicklaus but imagine if he did, he would be winning by even greater margins. His game is superb, the fact that he has a great short game and is the greatest clutch putter ever, along with tremendous ability with his irons, enourmous drives and being in great physical shape all means that Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer ever and soon enough he will have the major wins to back this up.

Pat Scanlan says...

No question Tiger is a wonderful golfer but I think it is impossible to make a fair comparison to Jack given the advances in the technology with both club and ball over the years. I am also somewhat puzzled by Tiger's knee injury, being a right handed player, his left knee bears most of the stresses and strains during the swing. It seemed to hurt very badly on some shots and not at all on most. Puzzling!

Christopher Coker says...

The language to describe Tiger Woods is not Greatest but rather hard working, determination with severe deep sense of commitment and responsibility to the sports of Golf and his family. Without all these he cannot winn all the majos to his credit.

Darren Garner says...

I think Tiger is great golfer but you have to look at the compertion he is up against, for me Jack Nicklaus had tougher golfers to play against Arnold Palmer Gray Player and even our own Tony Jacklin

Josh Albon says...

I dont believe tiger is the best yet, until he beats jack's record i dont think anyone has the right to claim that he is the best. not only this but i reckon tiger's style of play is actually quite unprofessional. he throws tantrums quite a lot and the amount of times i have seen him hit his drive into the rough is unbeleivable. but to be fair he certianly has an incredible short game and this makes up for this problem. as for him being a family man, i think its all a farce so he can get more press, because lets face it tiger loves the limelight.

Richard Longley says...

how anyone can not say tiger is the best makes me laugh i mean when you play golf you wonder how can you do what he does 99 percente of the time and to win a major on a course of that length and be in pain throughout it all amazing for me the best sporting person ever

Ken Gallacher says...

why is it only woods and nicklaus? what about jones, tom morris jnr, snead or hogan? nickaluas is my favourite for his style of play and humility something all great champions had but woods sadly lacks. best golfer pound for pound was gary player, 9 majors against the likes of palmer, nicklaus, watson, trevino, miller, seve and numerous others. as for tigers injury was it not ben hogan who won the us open a year after an almost fatal car crash.

Matthews Cholopi-phiri says...

The reason the others seem to have been great golfers during Jack's golf playing days was because Jack (as great as he might have been) was not as far from them as Tiger is from the rest. Its only because Tiger is so good that it seems the rest of them are average. If you think of all those people that have finished second, it would have been said that there are lots of great golfers, but because Tiger really does not give them a chance they seem all average.

Warren Booysen says...

Without a doubt the best ever. I really thought he was done and dusted when he went up 18 on Sunday and Monday and each time he proved me wrong. He MAKES it happen while everyone else (even with equivalent talent) hope it happens. If Tiger had Westwoods putt on 18 on Sunday ... he would have dropped it. We are all honoured to watch this man play because we will not see a golfer like this for decades to come. I just hope he stays injury free to make an assault on Jacks record. But really ... even if he doesn't make it he remains the best ever because Tiger competes in a golfing world of gym, phsycologists, personal trainers and a more elite field and he is outpacing Jack. Simply the greatest ever!!

Mark Anderson says...

If he stays fit and healthy, which on this weeks evidence I very much doubt. I still think Jack is the best. However Jack was 35 when he won his 14th Professional major, and Tiger is only 32. He's on schedule to overtake Jack's 18. However until he wins his 18th Professional major, he cannot lay claim to be the greatest of all time. End of discussion!!!

Posted 22:57 17th June 2008

Jon Moody says...

The greatest golfer according to major wins will be without doubt Tiger Woods but the so called best of the rest players challenging him are 24 handicap hackers compared to the top players Jack Nicklaus played against. The likes of Goosen, Els, Singh and Mickleson have only won 11 majors whilst Palmer, Watson, Player and Trevino total 30 nothing more to say it was far harder for the Goldern Bear to win than the Tiger
