Hatton: KO'd in two rounds
Ricky Hatton's pound-for-pound dream has been wrecked inside two shocking rounds.
Manny Pacquiao put the Hitman down twice in the first before ending a one-sided contest with a chilling left hook one second from the end of the second.
It was such a bad knockout that Hatton was out before he hit the canvas and he needed treatment before finally - thankfully - getting to his feet.
Whether he climbs back into a boxing ring again, is doubtful.
Hatton did no interviews, had to be helped from the ring and was surely headed for hospital. And possible retirement.
When his head clears he will realise that the performance was a complete and utter disaster. He came to Vegas dreaming of being crowned the best boxer on the planet. He will leave after an absolute nightmare.
At least it was a short one. Freddie Roach's initial three-round prediction was not far off the mark in the end. Pacquiao's trainer also said it was too late for the Hitman to change his style - and that was just as accurate.
In six ferocious minutes of action, there was no sign of any boxing skills, no head movement, no cunning whatsover as he tried to close the gap and take Pacquiao on on the inside.
Instead it was the Hatton of old. Walking straight forward, square on and, as he did even on that fateful night when he forced Kostya Tszyu to quit, taking way too many shots.
Reports of a rift with trainer Floyd Mayweather Snr on the eve of the biggest fight of his life can't have helped. If there had been problems - and in five minutes 59 seconds Hatton did little to dispel the rumours - they were cruelly exposed by the Filipino phenomenon, who now stands alone at the top of boxing's tree.
Hatton's plan to chop him down had been based on getting in close and in the very first clinch of the fight, he did get two sneaky shots in on the inside. But Pac Man hadn't even begun to fight.
A few seconds later and he was in the swing, catching his man with a right and even when he was pinned on the ropes, he slipped out untroubled.
Knowing his speed would keep him clear of any one-dimensional danger, he was then able to stand his ground in the face of thoughtless attacks and let his own fists fly.
A left-right-left combination soon had Hatton cowering, then a huge right hook, signalled the beginning of the end.
Down Hatton went, stunned, but got back to his feet at eight. It was no flash knockdown, no lucky counter, no fluke. It was speed, timing, power; everything a boxer craves, everthing Hatton had promised - and it was to be repeated.
The next time he stuttered forward, a straight left repeated the punishment and had the Hitman on his back again with 55 seconds of the first round still remaining.
Juan Manuel Marquez might have survived three first-round knockdowns against Pacquiao five years ago, but even though Hatton got up again and held on for the bell, this was so patently different. Pacquiao had, as promised, brought plenty of power up to 140lbs to match his pace.
As wrong as Hatton got it, Pacquiao did everything right - and had the stats to back it up. Out of 127 he threw, 73 landed and tellingly, only 18 came back in the other direction.
Hatton did at least catch his man at the start of the second, but still he was hunting in straight lines, not using, never mind moving his head. Soon enough another left landed and sent his head rocking back, while Pac Man let loose three or four-punch combinations and stepped out of range as Hatton lunged forward.
It was all too familiar and although he managed to mess Pac Man up for the next chunk, Bayless warned him for a low blow and roughing on the inside as desperation took over far sooner than anyone had dared fear.
How he made it to within a whisker of the end of the session perhaps only Pacquiao can answer, but just as the seconds were getting ready, the Hatton dream was ruined. Absolutely, unequivocally and, as fiancee Jennifer's piercing ringside scream will testify, horrendously.
This time he didn't even walk onto the shot. Almost casually, Pac Man prodded out half a jab before unleashing a lightning-fast left hook flush to the chin. Hatton toppled to his left, smacked the canvas hard and did not even need a count.
He did need extensive treatment and he will now need a serious assessment of just where to go next. Pacquiao, in contrast, can look forward to the winner of Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Marquez later this year.
On this chlling evidence, he can do so with supreme confidence. Boxing has a new pound-for-pound king. And sadly, he was a class above the same old Ricky Hatton.

Pacquiao was fantastic against Ricky Hatton. Ricky has an aggressive all out style that was perfectly suited to the quick counter punching style of Pacquiao. Freddie Roach had Paquiao perfectly schooled in how to pick Hatton off. I think however Floyd Mayweather Junior has the defensive skills to beat Pacquiao. When Pacquiao fought De la Hoya the Golden Boy was weigh drained, however it took Pacquiao 8 rounds to finish him. I think Floyd Mayweather junior will be more elusive to hit, more capable of taking the shots that Pacquiao can deliver on him, but most importantly has the offensive ability and variation to hurt and beat Pacquiao. I really hope Mayweather junior can beat Pacquiao, I belive at the end of the Hatton-Pacquiao fight the Pac Man was celebrating for too long when Hatton was still looking in bad shape on the canvas. I think it was very disrespectful to Hatton. Mayweather junior will beat him, be assured he will - if they get around to fighting.

New pound for pound king? Pacquiao has been dominant for the last 5 years, 2 of those he might have even been considered the pound for pound best regardless. Hatton was nothing to him, and should now test himself against the likes of cotto, mayweather and possibly marquez for a third time. He can begin to be considered among the all time greats, whereas hatton could only be considered as a modern great.

Such a shame, because the fight had so much potential, but you could see in the first minute, Ricky had already taken about 10 Head shots, and this was not gonna last. Credit to Pac-man, but we coulda seen a belter fight if Ricky woulda been more cleverer. 12 weeks of training too? As for all this let's see Pac-man beat Mayweather talk, Surely you can't dismiss Mayweather so easily. Mayweather was amazing, and would be Far Far too much for Pacquiao (as good as he is). Well Done though Ricky for what you've done in the sport, Enjoyed your many battles over the years. Go and enjoy a few hard earned pints now kiddo!

I like Ricky Hatton was but last he was totally outclassed against Pacman, theirs no way he can come back from this. Pacman looked so dangerous from the the word go, and the knockout was one of the most if not thee most devasting KO ever. I thought it would go Pacman's way but with a closer fought contest than that, Time to retire Hatton enjoy your Millions and serve the sport as an ambassador or Promoter.

Ricky your a star no matter what, but please retire now before you suffer permenant damage. You have entertained us for the last 12 years but have soaked up to much punishment in that time. Also your eating and drinking habits have taken there toll on the body. Will always love you and consider you one of the best who never ducked anyone but now is the time to quit.

Hatton is a good fighter. However, Pacman was in no doubt, under-estimated in this fight. Pacman gave Hatton a taste of his own medicine. Hatton was so cocky in the press conference and ignored the fact that Pacquiao was so relaxed during the weigh-in. Pacman, you bring great pride to your fellow Filipinos, and for someone who was declared "the greatest boxer ever". You manage to keep your feet on the ground. As for Hatton, should you decide to step into the ring again, may this be a lesson to you old chap. And I commend you for surviving Pacman's power punch, 100% of it.

Sorry to see Hatton flat on his back, but anyone with half a boxing brain knew this would be the outcome maybe a bit sooner than most thought. No deffence and a chin out to dry and when your in with the best in the business there will always be one outcome. Hatton is a warrior but it's too late to learn how to deffend, retire ricky you don't owe nothing to anyone all the best

Destroyed and humiliated, no gaurd what so ever he was made to look like a amateur it's a shame because he's entertained for many years but at the en of the day it's safe to say he's fought a lot of cowboys over the years, malagnagi was a loud mouth with no talent and hatton taught him a lesson but let's face it he's fought two world class opponents in PAC and mayweather and out classed in both I thought he looked nervous when he entered the ring I didn't think the PAC man would be so powerful best wishes to ricky he's a top bloke but it's time he walked away. Let's hope the same doesn't happen to David haye in June.

It's a shame it ended for Ricky like this, but after all the talk where was the defence? No head movement, walking straight forward, madness against a great fighter like Pacman. Rick has the power to trouble anyone at his weight class, but gets drawn into a brawl. He is still a graet fighter, and should be proud of all he has achieved. I do think that he should retire. Paul

Painfully sad to see Ricky go down the way he did but his undoubtable desire to take on anyone left him at a loose end, admirable as it is. Many would have side shifted past pacman and his amazing talents. Anyone who follows boxing properly will have watched manny for afew years now pretty much distroy anyone in his path (quietly and humbly in my opinion), and took the big punches himself along the way. Ricky will always be a great fighter, a privilage to watch over the years, what comes now only he knows. Congrats to manny the man, mayweather will never fight you, not in this lifetime im afraid.

Truly devastated!! Ricky lost the plot and just steamed in, the same problem he had with Mayweather! I truly believe that if he was more patient he would be a P4P king already, Im still proud of you Ricky at least you will fight the very best out there and right now Pacman is the best and he is humble with it as he stated, he was just doing his job nothing personal, you just cant hate him and Ive tried. Ricky what ever you decide to do in the future, you will always be loved in manchester!! Im just looking forward to Pacman knocking out Money or should I say mouth mayweather, because to be honest I think mayweather is very over rated but Pacman could well go on to be remembered as the greatest of all time!!

Am I being naive, but was there somthing else wrong with Ricky, he seemed very flat and didn't appear to bulk up to his usual weight from the weigh in to the fight. He seemed more wound up than before the Mayweather fight, which was arguably at the time a bigger fight, the bust up with Mayweather Snr perhaps?

Pacman to good for Hatman - simple as. It's funny how everybody thinks Manny will destory Mayweather, those sort of shots he hit Ricky with wont even get close to Floyds chin. Floyd has the speed, power and intelligence to out-maneuver Manny. Taking nothing away from the Pacman, he would definitely give Floyd the toughest fight of his career.

Shame to see Hatton lose, but in truth, he simply wasn't good enough. He is clearly not as good as we had believe, he lost to possibly the greatest boxer of all time in Floyd Mayweather. And I'm sure Pacquaio will suffer the same fate. Ricky has never had the right attitude, and it told last night.

I stayed up to watch the fight in the early hours of the morning, and even though I am English, I have to admit I was still rooting for Pacquiao. Simply because I knew that if Ricky had won he would just be dealt a crew blow by either Mayweather or Marquez and on the night, Pacquiao was outstanding. Aside from the few punches he took within the first 20 seconds or so, he showed a class that I think will rival that of Mayweather in his prime. I eagerly await the match up between Pacquiao and Mayweather or Marquez it's sure to be a cracker.

Got that one spectacularly wrong! Hatton fought exactly the right way for Manny to utilise his skills. Freddie Roach... what a coach. Really disappointed for Ricky, he was agreat ambassador/champion. But I can't see where he goes from here, no obvious 'supper' fights for him, other possible options would be an anti-climax. Whatever he decides he should be proud of his achievements! Prospect of some great fights occurring. I can't waith for Manny Vs Mayweather! Best P4P? My money is on Mayweather.

Congratulations to both guys. Eventhough we had a short fight but it was a hard fought one. But first, I hope Ricky is well. He's a great fighter. I still am a fan of Ricky though I'm a Filipino. Ricky fight with his heart and soul. But Pacquiao was just too much on that night. I believed in Ricky that he acquires/ develop some boxing skills over the months but it wasn't being used. He's a skillful fighter but it just didn't work against Pacquiao. The basic thing is hands up in the chin. He was too wide open. Vulnerable to counter shots. Look at Amir Khan, he improved his defense. He has improve his patience. Ricky just lunge in against Pacquiao with head first. So open with Pacquiao's ever improved right hook. Ricky can still fight I have no doubt about that one. But he should be patient and patience is not a hard virtue to learn. Anyway, God bless everybody. I'm glad to be in Hatton and Pacquiao's generation to experience their greatness!

Ricky, you gave me and my mates some great nights of boxing and nothing for me will ever beat the Kosta Tszyu fight atmosphere. But the sign of a great champion is knowing when to let go, just as Kosta knew. I hope you bow out the same way. Your record speaks for itself and your only defeats were against the two best P4P of the day. You might feel as though you've let everyone down now but imagine how you and your fans would feel if you did lose another fight against a lesser fighter? Enjoy your retirement, Ricky, you deserve it. There is nothing left to prove.

Before we all start jumping down Ricky's throat, i think we should all take a step back and thank him for what he has done for boxing fans, again giving the opportunity for England to be involved in a super fight, another fight which everybody cares about, not just hometown fans. Ricky is a very very good fighter and nobody can take that away from him, unfortunately for him, and us, when he took the final step to stardom, the final hurdle, he fell short. There is no disgrace in loosing to pacman and mayweather, obviously Ricky will think different, but both of them are even a step above superstars in my opinion. I love Pacman but was quite dissapointed to see him not even go over to the Hatton camp to see if he was ok after that brutal knock down, might be being picky...but it was clear the hitman was in a very bad way. I think it will be the right decision for Ricky to hang up his gloves, after all the great muhammed Ali reitred on a loss, it is no big deal, what he has done for the sport will never be forgotton, so therefore he never will be. Moving forward personally i think mayweather would beat pacman, despite of being out 0of action, he is arguably the best ever when it comes to talent, guile, elusivness, ring savvy, everything. But i look forward to that fight, predict mayweather to win by UD.

Ricky Hatton should retire. He has come up short against Mayweather and Pacquiao. He showed little sign of benefitting from that old bum Floyd snr instruction. Manny played ricky like a fiddle from the opener and what a sad sight it was to see a top pro laid there like 140ibs of pancake. Billy Graham must be pulling his hair out. Good luck Ricky.
