The five-year-old made great strides over hurdles last season, progressing from a lowly handicap mark to finish second in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at the Festival in March.
He then ran a sound race against his elders at Aintree and hopes are high he can reach the top over fences.
But making his debut in the hottest novices' chase of the season so far, African Gold could only finish fourth, beaten 26 lengths.
"He's absolutely fine after the race," said Twiston-Davies. "I thought he ran a perfectly good race first time out but he just didn't get up the hill.
"He jumped fine, I didn't notice a mistake, but he got a big whack at the third-last (off Bob Ford) and that wouldn't have helped him, either. I haven't decided where he'll run next."
