Nearly 350,000 ragegoers came through the gates of the Rowley Mile and the July Course at 38 fixtures between April and November.
Jockey Club Racecourses' regional director Amy Starkey, who took up her position at Newmarket Racecourses in the spring, said: "The year-on-year attendance increase in 2012 is very welcome and shows that the investments we have made to date in improving the experience for visitors are paying dividends.
"However, there is still more to do, especially in increasing the attraction of coming racing on the Rowley Mile in the spring and the autumn. There is no question about the quality of the horse racing that we stage at Newmarket Racecourses and central to our strategy will be encouraging more visitors to enjoy the thrills of our sport."
Planning for 2013 is well under way and the racecourses expect to be able to announce by the New Year the acts for the 27th season of the Adnams Newmarket Nights on the July Course in the summer.
Crowds at the Newmarket Nights in 2012, which featured leading artists like Jessie J and Sir Tom Jones, topped 100,000.
The 2013 racing season at Newmarket Racecourses begins with the two-day Craven Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday 17 and 18 April.
