Some 29 horses have been put into the Group Three event, including Jim Bolger's long-absent Dewhurst winner Parish Hall and the Marco Botti-trained Planteur, who have both been talked of as Meydan contenders.
Red Cadeaux, the seasoned traveller, could not improve on his second place in the 2011 Melbourne Cup when back at Flemington in November but he went on to clinch the Hong Kong Vase and Dunlop is planning further overseas raids.
"To be honest, we're in the same position as some of the other horses in that we are considering going to Dubai for the World Cup, Sheema Classic or stayers' race and we would have to wait for an invitation," he said.
"This race is an option beforehand if he needs a race. He's only just back and in work, but everything is going well.
"Towards the end of the year there are the same targets, and there's also the possibility of running in Japan in April for a valuable race called the Tenno Sho."
Dunlop has changed tack with Unbridled Command, a fascinating recruit to his operation who won the Hollywood Derby in America last November.
"Dubai was discussed for Unbridled Command but he's not going to go there," he said. "He will come over to me and ultimately be trained for the Cox Plate."
Last year's Winter Derby winner Premio Loco is among the entries as is Aidan O'Brien's lightly-raced El Salvador and Pigeon Catcher, a possible runner for French-based trainer Pia Brandt.
