Emma Lavelle's novice was still travelling powerfully when he belted the second last fence, causing him to lose all his momentum.
He recovered to finish third, beaten just a length and a half by Savello.
"He took the second last with him, it was gutting," said Lavelle.
"When Noel (Fehily) came back in, he said he hit it that hard he's amazed the fence was still there afterwards. He's gone up 4lb but I still think he's well handicapped, as long as the ground is good.
"Noel suggested we have a good think about running in the Celebration Chase at Sandown as a lot of the horses from the Queen Mother go to either Aintree or Sandown and Sire De Grugy might not run.
"Why shouldn't we have a crack? He's definitely improving and is a very good horse. We knew that but you need to see them do it in a good race.
"When he ran in the Grade One at Sandown (Henry VIII), we set it up for the others and he didn't get his ground. We know how to ride him now.
"We could run Off The Ground in the Red Rum at Aintree instead, he travelled really well in the JLT but didn't get home over two and a half up the hill and the ground was maybe a bit slow for him."
