Patrick Kane scored twice as the Blackhawks moved into a 3-2 series lead after a bone-crunching clash to leave the Bruins needing a win when the best-of-seven series moves back to Boston on Monday.
There was no repeat of the entertaining 6-5 shootout in Game Four as both sides reverted to the close-checking style seen in the opening matches of the series.
And there was a price to pay as Boston's leading scorer Patrice Bergeron was forced out in the second period and taken to hospital while Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews stayed on the bench for the third period.
Kane opened the scoring with a deft backhand late in the first period then doubled the lead with his ninth goal of the play-offs at 5:13 in the second.
Zdeno Chara rifled in a reply for the Bruins at 3:40 of the final period but Boston's hopes of forcing overtime were ended when Dave Bolland scored into an empty net with 14 seconds to play.
