With Man Utd chasing a quintuple, skysports.com looks at sides that have enjoyed similarly excellent campaigns

The word quintuple does not often crop up in football circles but it has become an essential part of the vocabulary for any Manchester United fan over the last few weeks.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men went to Japan before Christmas to triumph in the Club World Cup and beat Tottenham on penalties in the Carling Cup final to capture the second of a possible five trophies.

They are hoping to claim Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup winners' medals over the next few months but which other teams around the world have enjoyed similarly successful campaigns?

Manchester United - 1999

United became the first English team to win the domestic double as well as the Champions League ten years ago. They clinched the Premier League title with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham on the final day of the season and defeated Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley in the final of the FA Cup. Bayern Munich looked set to deny United in the Champions League before Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer popped up in stoppage time to write their names into club folklore and seal the most dramatic of 2-1 wins.

Celtic - 1967

Jock Stein led Celtic to an unprecedented quadruple with the highlight being a European Cup victory over Inter Milan in Lisbon. The Bhoys also swept aside everyone they met on the domestic scene as they landed the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup. Victory in the Glasgow Cup also ensured the club won every competition they entered.

Ajax - 1972

Ajax may not have challenged for Champions League glory in recent years but they were once the dominant force in European football and won a fantastic treble in 1972. Johan Cruyff netted both goals as Ajax beat Inter Milan 2-0 to be crowned kings of the continent, while they also won the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup.

PSV Eindhoven - 1988

Another fine year for Dutch football as PSV Eindhoven emerged triumphant in the European Cup. Under the guidance of current Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink, PSV beat Benfica on penalties after a goalless final. They matched Ajax's achievement of 1972 by coming out on top in the Eredivisie and winning the Cup.

Al Ahly - 2005 and 2006

Winning the treble is not confined to European teams and Al Ahly managed to do it twice in succession earlier this decade. Al Ahly became African champions in 2005 and also won the Egyptian league and cup double. Not content with winning everything once, Al Ahly defended all their trophies 12 months later.

Santos - 1962 and 1963

Pele spent virtually all of his career with homeland club Santos and, not surprisingly, they were a formidable outfit during the 1960s. Santos captured Brazil's national championship for five years in a row from 1961 to 1965 and they backed it up with success in international club competitions. In 1962 and 1963 they won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup.

Liverpool - 2001

Liverpool won a unique treble under Gerard Houllier which started with a League Cup final win over Birmingham on penalties. Michael Owen was the star of the FA Cup showpiece as his two late goals stunned Arsenal, while the Uefa Cup final was a thriller from start to finish as the Reds beat Alaves 5-4 after extra time. Liverpool went on to add two more pieces of silverware to their trophy cabinet at the start of the next season as they prevailed in the Community Shield and the European Super Cup.

Porto - 2003

Jose Mourinho made his name at Porto and his greatest accomplishment was leading the unheralded Portuguese side to Champions League glory in 2004. A year earlier, however, he had masterminded an impressive treble which culminated with victory over Celtic in the final of the Uefa Cup. Porto had managed to stay focused on domestic matters and won the SuperLiga and the Portuguese Cup.

Galatasaray - 2000

Galatasaray won a similar treble to Porto three years earlier with a Turkish double plus the Uefa Cup. Fatih Terim's men won the league and cup at home before becoming the first Turkish club to claim a major European trophy. They beat Arsenal 4-1 on penalties in the final of the Uefa Cup and went on to defeat Real Madrid in the European Super Cup at the start of the following season.

Linfield - 1922 and 1962

Linfield have twice taken all seven trophies available to them, winning the league championship, Irish Cup, Alhambra Cup, Gold Cup, City Cup, County Antrim Shield and Charity Cup. They are the most successful club in the history of Northern Irish football with 48 domestic titles.
