- Top ten derby goals
Skysports.com has a look at some of the best goals ever to have graced a Manchester derby.
Sunday sees the two Manchester giants go head-to-head once again at Old Trafford as champions United play host to Roberto Mancini's City. With two quality teams on show there is sure to be a feast of free-flowing football from start to finish. There have been some memorable strikes in derbies gone by, skysports.com takes a look at the pick of the bunch.
Denis Law - Man City - April 1974
It is unthinkable for Manchester United to be relegated in the modern era, but that feat happened in the 1973/74 campaign. The Red Devils were already down due to Birmingham City's win on the same day, however, the match at Old Trafford was illuminated by Law's sublime back-heel. The Scot was a United legend, but he showed he had not lost the scoring touch with a cheeky goal that gave City a 1-0 success.
Ryan Giggs - Man Utd - April 1996
The Welsh wizard has scored some superb goals during his lengthy spell at Old Trafford and his first-time finish to settle a five-goal thriller at Maine Road was no exception. Substitute Uwe Rosler's strike was a blistering drive to level matters, however, German keeper Eike Immel was clutching at thin air when Giggs latched onto Eric Cantona's through ball before sending an unstoppable shot into the top corner to seal a 3-2 success.
Benjani - Man City - February 2008
The Zimbabwean barely made a name for himself during his time at Manchester City, but his winner in the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air tragedy will live long in City fans' memories. City have enjoyed little success against their neighbours in recent seasons, but Benjani lit up Old Trafford by scoring their second of the game after Darius Vassell had scored City's first. Martin Petrov swung in a cross that Benjani glanced inside the far corner of the net.
Wayne Rooney - Man Utd - February 2011
World class sums up this goal perfectly. Manchester City, bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour were serious rivals to the Red Devils, however, they were powerless to prevent the awesome ability of Rooney settling the contest. David Silva cancelled out Nani's opener, but the game was won by a piece of pure brilliance. Nani crossed the ball into the box for Rooney to launch himself into the air and smash an overhead kick past the helpless Joe Hart in City's goal to bag a 2-1 success.
Shaun Wright-Phillips - Man City - March 2004
The diminutive winger added the icing on the cake for Manchester City on this occasion with a pin-point shot that condemned Sir Alex Ferguson's troops to a heavy 4-1 defeat. Not content with simply running down the clock Wright-Phillips burst clear down the right and, despite being faced with a near impossible angle, he arrowed a shot over Tim Howard that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar to send the home faithful into raptures.
Mark Hughes - Man Utd - September 1989
City might have stolen the show on the day with a 5-1 demolition job of United, however, the pick of the bunch was scored by a man in a red shirt. Mark Hughes rarely scored tap-ins and he made his mark on the game with an exquisite scissor-kick in the contest. The visitors were already three-down at Maine Road when Russell Beardsmore crossed from the right and Hughes made no mistake in the middle with a clinical first-time finish.
Shaun Goater - Man City - November 2002
The Bermudan striker had already embarrassed Gary Neville earlier in the game by robbing the defender of possession before firing City back in front from an acute angle. However, he was not finished with United just yet. The one-time Old Trafford youngster latched onto a Eyal Berkovic pass before composing himself and dispatching a delightful chip over Fabian Barthez to secure a 3-1 win in the final Manchester derby ever to be played at Maine Road. It was also his 100th Manchester City goal.
Eric Cantona - Man Utd - November 1994
The French talisman enjoyed playing against Manchester City more than most. The ex-Leeds United striker had the knack of finding the back of the net against their city neighbours. In the 1993/94 campaign he opened the scoring in style as the home side ran riot in what proved a 5-0 demolition job. Cantona latched onto a drilled through ball from Andrei Kanchelskis and he controlled the ball with precision before dispatching a curling left-footed shot.
Craig Bellamy - Man City - September 2009
The Welsh striker could barely have contributed more with a brace of goals at Old Trafford, but it was not enough to prevent a crushing 4-3 loss for Mark Hughes' men. Darren Fletcher's header put United back in front after Gareth Barry had levelled Rooney's earlier opener. Bellamy scored City's second equaliser with a long-range special that gave Ben Foster no chance of a save. He cut in from the left on his right foot and let fly from the edge of the penalty area.
Nani - Man Utd - August 2011
Nani capped off a brilliant team goal by Manchester United in their come-from-behind 3-2 success over Manchester City in the Community Shield earlier this season. The Portuguese playmaker levelled matters at Wembley by putting the finishing touch on a free-flowing move. Tom Cleverley burst forward and his pass was touched onto Wayne Rooney by Danny Welbeck. Nani then fed Rooney before Cleverley's first-time flick was collected by Nani who controlled the ball before dinking a left-footed effort beyond Joe Hart to complete a special move.
