The 27-year-old regularly surprises the opposition with his remarkable strength despite standing a mere 1.68 metres in his socks and weighing a moderate 82 kg. Januarie started his rugby in the Boland and represented South Africa at U19 and U21 levels before moving north in 2003 to play Super 14 rugby for the Lions. He made his Springbok debut in 2005 against Uruguay and has gone on to earn 34 caps for his country. During this time he established himself as an automatic selection for the Springbok squad but he had to share the starting berth with the world's best scrum-half, Fourie du Preez. Januarie signed for the Cape-based Stormers in 2008 where he continues to terrorize the opposition's loose forwards and half-back combinations with his sniping runs and aggressive defense.
Miles Harrison says the Lions want to show their style of rugby can lead to victory and not just gallant defeats.
Despite losing the series, Stuart Barnes believes that the Lions have enhanced their reputation.
