Australia vs India
Australia Win By 122 Runs
Warner insists Australia "hunted as a pack", Ponting reckons "this is a fantastic Test match win" and Siddle is proud of his performance as well as the respective showings of his fellow seamers - pats on the pack for the home side are vast and varied as the celebrations commence, India, meanwhile, are back in their dressing room, lamenting a rather sorry loss. Pattinson lands the Man of the Match award, and captain Clarke wants more of the triumphant same as the teams look ahead to the next Test in Sydney, starting early next year. Catch you then. Cheers, for now.
Over 47.5 Lyon 0-0-6-0-W
169-10 - A host of close-in fielders are left to twiddle their thumbs as Yadav's slog travels high and hard over long-on for six. He later goes again, but there isn't enough carry in it, with Warner running around the ropes to take a great catch to his right. And that, folks, is the end of the match.
Over 47 Pattinson 1-0-0-0-0-1
163-9 - Pattinson gets in a string of bouncers again, and might cop another warning from the umpire if he is not careful. One of the short balls is very well directed, with Yadav forced to take evasive action in order to avoid having his block knocked off. Drinks break, meanwhile.
Over 46 Lyon 1-0-1-0-0-4
161-9 - The tail continues to wag, with Yadav delaying Australia's victory celebrations by slapping four straight down the ground again. At least the tail-enders are enjoying themselves out there shortly before the final nail is sealed into the proverbial coffin.
Over 45 Pattinson 2-0-1-0-2-1
155-9 - Striving for a five-for, Pattinson is always in with a chance as Yadav and Ishant deploy baseball-esque tactics, swinging at everything. No breakthrough for the seamer yet, though, as India at least bring up their 150.
Over 44 Lyon 0-1-0-4-0-0
149-9 - Change of bowling as the spinner gets a go. Lyon almost enjoys immediate success to end the match, but Yadav's leading edge balloons marginally over mid-off's head for four. The cavalier right-hander then fancies a fat dip over midwicket, but misses and has his stumps missed by a mere whisker.
Over 43 Pattinson 0-W-0-2-0-0
144-9 - WICKET! Mum Nature starts to warm up her voice in anticipation of Aussie triumph as Dhoni falls. As was the case with Zaheer, the Indian captain swings across the line, but misses everything. He wanted that high and hard over the on-side, but instead looks around to see the stumps toppled. A severe lack of footwork was his undoing. Pattinson has a four-for and Yadav is the last man in.
Over 42 Hilfenhaus 1-0-0-0-0-0
142-8 - Entirely true to the defensive nature in which he plays, Ishant wants nothing to do with the bowler's bid to have him toy with one outside the off-stump, instead hauling out some characteristic discipline to leave anything and everything alone - plenty of catching practice for Haddin.
Over 41 Pattinson 0-0-4-6-W-0
141-8 - With no love lost between the tail-ender and the seamer after the previous over's string of short balls, Zaheer decides it's time to get his own back with a couple of big hits. He wields the willow over cover for a boundary Dhoni would have been proud of, then backs away to the leg-side, frees his arms and goes absolutely huge down the ground for six - that's no mean feat because this MCG arena is large. WICKET! Pattinson, however, has the last laugh by following Khan, who again backs away to the leg-side. Cramped for room, the right-hander tries to tuck the ball through to midwicket but succeeds only in bobbling a simple catch from bat to pad and into Cowan's hands at short-leg. That's the end of that cameo and Ishant is in now.
Over 40 Hilfenhaus 0-1-0-1wd-1-0-1
131-7 - Now Hilfenhaus is going after the short ball and it's a clear sign that the Australians are just keen for a bit of intimidatory tactics. Hilfenhaus gets called wide for another bouncer as it goes way over Dhoni's head. They won't take this lying down, I fancy the Indians are going to try and hit back here with a few big hits.
Over 39 Pattinson 0-2-1-0-0-1nb-1
127-7 - Pattinson is looking to pepper Zaheer Khan with a barrage of short balls. There's plenty of chatter out there and umpire Erasmus no-balls Pattinson for a third bouncer. He has a word with Michael Clarke as well, just to tell the captain to calm his players down. It seems Pattinson is no longer interested in taking wickets, but rather knocking Khan on the head.
Over 38 Hilfenhaus 0-1-0-0-0-0
122-7 - Another quiet over from Hilfenhaus who is bowling some good wicket-to-wicket stuff now, very similar to that of Glenn McGrath. Dhoni manages to get a single as he pushes to mid-on and Khan is able to block out the over.
Over 37 Siddle 0-0-2-1lb-0-0
1217 - Dhoni's going to need some support here from Khan and while he may look shaky running between the wickets, he definitely can hold a bat. Just three wickets remaining for Australia and a mammoth 170 runs for India.
Over 36 Hilfenhaus 0-0-1-0-0-0
118-7 - Dhoni has Zaheer Khan for company now who nearly gets himself run out as he's late to set off for a single. A direct hit would have had him out by a country mile, but he luckily gets home. Hilfenhaus continues to toil outside off and it's a great position for Australian cricket to have him, Siddle and Pattinson on form. Ryan Harris and Pat Cummins are still on the sidelines and despite their form before injury, they might struggle to get back into this side. What about Mitchell Johnson? He's surely fallen well down the pecking order now.
Over 35 Siddle 0-0-0-0-0-W
117-7 - WICKET! Siddle roughs Ashwin up with a short ball and he's caught in no-man's land as Haddin takes a sharp catch. There's an appeal, but it's half-hearted. The very next ball Siddle tries the short one again and this time Ashwin loops it straight up and short-leg Ed Cowan bags the catch he'll ever take in Test cricket. Surely it's all over now for India.
Over 34 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-0-0-0
117-6 - A patient maiden to begin with for Hilfenhaus who has done well to keep Dhoni quiet. The Indian captain was keen to smash the boundaries when he first came to the wicket, but following a few wickets, he's had to knuckle down and try play a more responsible knock here.
Final throw of the dice after tea
There's still another 175 runs between India and victory, but the partnership of Ravichandran Ashwin and MS Dhoni is up to 36 and could build into something more significant after tea. It's been a rather ordinary batting display from India today, but all credit to Australia's bowlers who have generally put the ball in the right areas.
Over 33 Siddle 4-4-0-4-0-0
117-6 - Ashwin gets another inside edge and flies to fine leg for four. Siddle's not displeased and actually rather proud to have found the edge because he knows he's in business here. Ashwin follows it up with another streaky one which flies past a diving gully before playing a more convincing drive past Siddle for a third boundary in the over. With that, it's time for tea.
Over 32 Lyon 1-0-0-0-3-0
105-6 - Good over from Lyon has he floats it up to try and attempt the batsmen, but he drops one a bit too wide and Ashwin isn't one to miss out and drives it out for three.
Over 31 Siddle 0-0-1-1-0-4
101-6 - So close to a seventh wicket as Siddle finds the edge, but Ashwin went hard at it and it flew over Ponting's head at slip and off to the boundary for four. It's streaky, but every run counts.
Over 30 Lyon 1-0-0-0-1-0
95-6 - Just a couple of singles in that over and the Indian selectors might be pondering some changes for the New Year's Test in Sydney. Gautam Gambhir failed twice in this match, while Virat Kohli could also face pressure for the number six spot from Rohit Sharma.
Over 29 Siddle 0-2-0-4-0-2
93-6 - Ashwin decides to get in on the act as he guides one through third-man for four before getting a thick edge and finding another two runs in that area. He's comfortable at the crease, but he's going to a need a lot more luck if India are to come close.
Over 28 Lyon 0-0-2-0-0-0
85-6 - Well now Clarke has brought the spinner on for the first time in this innings. Lyon tosses it up to Dhoni who might be a bit more cautious now that Tendulkar is gone. He cuts behind point and comes back for a second. There's a direct hit at the wicketkeeper's end and they have a look at the replay, but Dhoni was comfortably in his ground.
Over 27 Siddle W-1-1-0-0-0
83-6 - WICKET! It doesn't get much better than this for Peter Siddle who comes back into the attack and straight away tempts Tendulkar into the drive, but it goes straight to Hussey. Masterstroke by Michael Clarke who made the bowling change and one has to say that wicket might be the last hope India had of chasing this down.
Over 26 Hilfenhaus 6-2-0-0-0-0
81-5 - Dhoni is in a mood it seems as he gets off the mark with a massive six over mid-wicket. He follows it up by going over the top on the off side for two and this looks like classic Dhoni from years before. Can he do this for India?
Over 25 Pattinson 0-4-0-0-0-0
73-5 - Another streaky one for Tendulkar who is late to get his bat out of the way while trying to leave. Again the result is four runs, but this time it's through the third man area. Dhoni and Tendulkar at the crease, there's still hope for India as they search for another 219.
Over 24 Hilfenhaus 0-1-W-0-0-0
69-5 - WICKET! Kohli's trapped plumb in front to Hilfenhaus. That's stone dead in front and Kohli looks back at the umpire with disdain, but he has no-one but himself to blame. MS Dhoni comes to the crease, but he's out there by himself as Tendulkar has just gone off to the change room for a quick break. Very interesting bowling from Hilfenhaus who is swinging the ball in now, as opposed to reversing it which he was doing just two overs ago. Definitely some confusing times out there for the batsmen.
Over 23 Pattinson 0-0-0-0-0-4
68-4 - WICKET! Pattinson continues to probe outside that off stump where there's a chance Laxman might just nick one to the slips. He ends the over by putting it on his pads and the right-hander flicks it straight to Ed Cowan at square-leg. Umpire Erasmus puts a brief halt to the celebrations as he asks for a replay of a possible no ball, but the visuals are on the side of the bowler who landed behind the line. Big trouble now for India.
Over 22 Hilfenhaus 0-0-1-0-4-0
68-3 - Tendulkar punches one straight back down the ground for four. He showed the full face of the bat and that was all timing from the Little Master. Hilfenhaus replies with the fast-bowler's special, but Sachin is easily able to get under the bouncer as the teams take a quick drinks break.
Over 21 Pattinson 0-0-0-0-4-0
63-3 - Tendulkar tries to leave one outside off, but is too late to take his bat out the way and it ricochets back off the edge and flies just past the leg stump. Pattinson has his head in his hands as the ball goes to the fine leg boundary to add insult to injury.
Over 20 Hilfenhaus 1-0-0-0
59-3 - Hilfenhaus appears to be getting a bit of reverse swing. We're only in the 20th over so that's very strange as the ball is still relatively new. Laxman is able to deal with it as he is greeted with a toe-crushing yorker, but blocks out the over.
Over 19 Pattinson 0-0-0-2-1-W
55-3 - WICKET! It's a huge breakthrough for Australia as Rahul Dravid's wall collapses in exactly the same fashion as it did in the first innings. Pattinson gets one to nip back and it goes between bat and knocks the middle peg back. Interesting scenes at the MCG as Michael Clarke has a stern word with Pattinson instead of celebrating the wicket. Clarke appears to be gesturing some swing movements, perhaps just giving Pattinson some guidance on how to now get Tendulkar out.
Over 18 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-1-0-0-
55-2 - Tendulkar is really eager to score fast and get on top of these Australian bowlers. He works one away to mid-wicket for a single and again it's another very wristy shot. Dravid, by contrast, is a bit more circumspect in his approach, but we've come to expect this after years of seeing him at the crease.
Over 17 Pattinson 0-1-1-0-0-0
54-2 - James Pattinson is back into the attack and now bowling in tandem with Ben Hilfenhaus. They did a job with the bat and now it's time to do it with the ball. Their last wicket partnership of 43 was immense as India lost their first two wickets with only 39 on the board. Will that come back to haunt India or can Dravid and Tendulkar repeat their first-innings heroics?
Over 16 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-0-0-0
52-2 - Hands on heads as Tendulkar plays and misses. Brad Haddin wanted to go up for the catch, but thought better of it. Hilfenhaus has really done well on his comeback Test. He's taken six wickets so far and looking good for a seventh.
Over 15 Siddle 0-0-0-4-0-1
52-2 - Shot of the day as Tendulkar picks that up from off stump and slicks it away to mid-wicket for four. Brilliant timing to go with some brilliant use of the wrists. Much like he did in the first innings, Sachin has raced away at more than a run a ball here. Is this going to be the day he gets that 100?
Over 14 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-2-3-0
47-2 - There's over 28,000 Test runs between the two players at the crease so there's certainly no doubt that in Dravid and Tendulkar India have the fire power to chase down this total. Tendulkar pushes out for a single, but he gets two bonus overthrows and he'll gladly take that as they target a further 245.
Over 13 Siddle W-3-0-0-0-0
42-2 - WICKET! Gambhir is gone as he pushes at one going across him and edges it to Ricky Ponting at slip. Usually when an Indian wicket falls, the crowd would remain silent, but not when the next man in is Sachin Tendulkar. The Little Master gets a standing ovation and is off the mark straight away with a drive through the covers for three. Australia are in a great mood all of a sudden. They certainly have the edge.
Over 12 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-0-0-0
39-1 - Good over from Hilfenhaus as he probes at that off stump channel to Dravid. The veteran is able to block and leave comfortably.
Over 11 Siddle 0-0-0-4-0-0
35-1 - So close to playing on as Siddle is quickly onto the bat of Gambhir. The left-hander played back, but it bounced down and rolled within inches of the leg stump. Siddle is then full and wide and he receives the punishment as Gambhir drives to the boundary
Over 10 Hilfenhaus 0-0-3-0-4lb-4
35-1 - Big over for India as Gambhir is first beaten outside off as he plays around it, then he pushed through the covers and they come back for three. Hilfenhaus strays on the pads to the right-hander and Dravid glances it past Dhoni, but the umpire calls it leg-byes. The Wall then stands firm and drives handsomely straight back past the bowler for four.
Big session for India
Lunch is done and it will be Ben Hilfenhaus to get things underway to Gautam Gambhir. He needs a big innings and India have a tough session ahead of them as Australia will no doubt be attacking from ball one. Let's go!
Lunch, day four
At 24-1 with another 268 runs to win, one feels that Australia have the upper hand in this Test. Adding to that, the dangerman Virender Sehwag is already out after hitting straight to Mike Hussey in the gully. Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir have a tough task ahead of them after lunch.
Over 9 Pattinson 0-3-1-0-0-0-
24-1 - Dravid drives out to cover and it pulls up short of the boundary as they come back for a third.Gamnhir then gets a single to cover and Dravid uses his wealth of experience to calmly see out the rest of the over as the teams go into the lunch break.
Over 8 Hilfenhaus 0-0-0-0-0-0
20-1 - Gambhir's playing an interesting game here as he let's Hilfenhaus go through his entire run up before pulling out of his stance. The Aussies are a bit annoyed and there's plenty of banter going on at the moment. Gambhir appeared to have been put off by the chatter and decided not to face up at the last minute. He's certainly ruffled and plays and misses to one outside off and there's plenty of oohs and aaahs from the Australians. It seems there's time for one more over before lunch.
Over 7 Pattinson 0-0-0-0-1-2
20-1 - Gambhir pushes one out to backward point where Warner jumps up to make the stop. There's a loud roar from the crowd as it looked like a catch, but Gambhir hit that straight into the ground. Dravid gets off the mark immediately as he turns one away to fine leg for two.
Over 6 Hilfenhaus 1-0-0-1-0-W
17-1 - WICKET! Huge breakthrough for Australia as Sehwag goes hard at one outside off stump, but its straight to Michael Hussey at gully who plucks it out of the air and suddenly Australia have their tails up with the danger failing to make an impact on this second innings.
Over 5 Pattinson 0-0-0-0-0-0
15-0 - Another shaky shot from Gambhir who is comprehensively beaten as he goes on the drive. The aggressive side of the Australians comes out now as Pattinson digs in the bouncer before having a few words with Gambhir. David Warner comes running into the action to join in the conversation, but umpire Ian Gould takes control of the situation and sends the chirpy Warner back to his fielding position.
Over 4 Hilfenhaus 0-0-1-0-0-0
15-0 - Hilfenhause gets one to zip away off the seam and he beats the left-handed Gambhir who was tentatively pushing at that one. It's been a streaky start to the innings and India still need another 277 to get home.
Over 3 Pattinson 1-0-4lb-1-0-4
14-0 - Some streaky runs as Pattinson strays on the pads and it goes down to the boundary for four leg byes as Gambhir misses. Sehwag then has a wild drive outside off stump and it flies between the slips and the gully for four. Well he's clearly not worried by the magnitude of this chase and will be playing his natural game.
Over 2 Hilfenhaus 0-0-1-0-0-1
4-0 - Good start from Hilfenhaus who is swinging the ball into the pads of the left-hander straight away. Gambhir gets a single to put the dangerous Sehwag on strike. Sehwag gets an inside edge onto the pad and they sneak off for another one as he gets off the mark.
Over 1 Pattinson 1wd-0-0-0-0-0-1
2-0 - James Pattinson is a bit over excited following his batting heroics as he sends that one down almost to second slip, much like Steve Harmison did at the start of the Ashes. Haddin takes it, but he was catching in front of the slips there. Gambhir manages to get off the mark as he works it to square leg for a single.
292 to win for India
Virender Sehwag said yesterday that he was happy to chase anything under 300. Well, he has his wish, but it's not going to be easy. The Indian openers face a tricky 35-minute period here before lunch.
Over 77 Ishant 1-0-W
240-10 - WICKET! There's the final wicket as Ishant has Hilfenhaus edging to to VVS Laxman at slip. Australia added 61 runs today and that means the visitors will be chasing 292 which leaves us with an intriguing remainder to the day. Look out for a quick start from Virender Sehwag.
Over 76 Ashwin 1-0-0-0-4-4
239-9 - Dhoni has taken the silly mid-off and put him in at second slip and Hilfenhause cracks one through the covers which pulls up inches short of the boundary. The Indian fielders are a bit slow to chase after that and they're able to run four. This lead is near 300 now and Hilfenhaus follows it up with a smashing cover drive which goes over the ropes. There are some worried Indian faces out there now.
Over 75 Ishant 0-0-0-1-0-0
230-9 - Ishant is on after the break to try and end this partnership, but Dhoni doesn't have very attacking field and there are singles on offer on bothe sides of the square. Pattinson takes one and Hilfenhaus is able to block out the over.
Over 74 Ashwin 1-0-0-0-1-1
229-9 - Every run added to the score is hurting India now. Yesterday Virender Sehwag said India could chase 300, but he made it sound like that would be the absolute most and with the lead at 280 we're in for a cracking chase - when India take the final wicket that is. We've had an hour of play. Time for a drink.
Over 73 Khan 0-4-0-3nb-1-0-0
226-9 - Khan finds the edge and it goes agonisingly wide of the diving Sehwag at gulley and through for four. This partnership is 29 now at almost five an over. This could prove the difference if India don't stop this partnership very soon. Remember Hilfenhaus and Pattinson also put on 27 for the eighth wicket in the first innings so they've added over 50 runs over two innnings and in the context of the match that's valuable stuff.
Over 72 Ashwin 0-4-0-0-0-0
218-9 - Dhoni brings the spinner into the attack now just to try and flummox the tail-enders, but Hilfenhaus cuts him to the boundary for four. Ashwin responds with one that holds it's line and beats the number 11 outside off stump.
Over 71 Khan 1-0-0-0-0-2
214-9 - Half-volley and Hilfenhaus is able to drive and get off the mark as the field is out to let him get off strike. It seems Khan would rather bowl at the left-handed Pattinson who he beats outside off with another peach of a delivery. Pattinson adds another two has Zaheer strays onto the pads and is whipped away to fine leg. Valuable runs here from Pattinson.
Over 70 Yadav 0-0-0-2-2-4
211-9 - DROPPED! Pattinson goes on the hook and Zaheer Khan puts down the chance at fine-leg. Not the hardest of chances he'll ever have to take, but he certainly is not known for his fielding. He had to cover a fair amount of ground, but got two hands to it so really should have held on. That could prove decisive as the batsmen take run two before Pattinson pulls a short ball from Yadav to the boundary in front of square. The lead is now 262 and it's getting very dangerous for India.
Over 69 Khan 0-0-0-0-0-0
203-9 - Khan is around the wicket now to the right-handed Hilfenhaus and he's on the pads straight away, but it's going down leg. That's a good attacking over from Khan who really brings a good dimension to this Indian attack and will clearly have a lot of bowling to do over this series.
Over 68 Yadav 2-0-0-0-0-4
203-9 - Let's see what Pattinson and Hilfenhaus can do with the bat. APPEAL! There's another appeal for caught behind and the only man who was really confident was Rahul Dravid at slip as the bat hit the ground as the ball went through to Dhoni. I think Dravid is just keen to get his pads on and start this run chase as soon as possible as he was halfway back to the pavilion before the decision was even made. He was just that confident. Pattinson responds with a sublime cover drive to take Australia past the 200-mark now. They lead by 254.
Over 67 Khan 4-0-4-1nb-0-W-0
197-9 - Hussey finally finds the middle of the bat as he cover drives Khan for four. But then he follows it up with a streaky one that's edged through third man for another boundary. Hussey is approaching the 90s no1. WICKET! The breakthrough comes as Khan produces an away swinger which squares Hussey up as he edges through to Dhoni. Great innings from Hussey, but that was a special ball to get rid of a man who was well set and nearing a century. Ben Hilfenhaus manages to block out the final ball of the over.
Over 66 Yadav 0-0-1-0-0-0
188-8 - APPEAL! There's a shout for a catch down legside as Dhoni moves to his right for a brilliant take, but the umpire says no. Hotspot proves Hussey got a thick edge on that, but again DRS haunts the Indians. That's three times now that Mike Hussey has been out in this innings. It seems there's huge drama every ball at the moment.
Over 65 Khan 0-0-0-0-0-0
187-8 - APPEAL! Khan goes up as he strikes Pattinson on the pad, but this time there's no support from behind the stumps. Zaheer appeals about five times, but the replays show there was some bat involved and it was a good decision by the umpire to say not out. Well the runs have dried up now as India complete their second consecutive maiden and one feels the wicket is just around the corner after some nervy starts from both batsmen.
Over 64 Yadav 0-0-0-0-0-0
187-8 - APPEAL! Hussey is struck on the pad and the wicketkeeper goes up, but there's very little support from Yadav who should have been a bit more convincing in his appeal as it hit the pad plumb in front. Replays show the left-hander would have been given out if the DRS was in place - and maybe even if Yadav had been a bit more vociferous like his skipper Dhoni.
Over 63 Khan 0-1-0-0-0-0
187-8 - Hussey gets his session going with a push to mid-on and goes to 80. Pattinson then sees out the over and is showing he's more than a capable lower-end batsman and could help Australia take this lead past the 280 mark.
Over 62 Yadav 0-2-4-0-0-0
186-8 - Yadav gets some prodigious in swing, but Pattinson takes it on the body as it strikes him high up on the thigh. The first runs of the day off the bat come as he turns one around the corner for two. He promptly follows it up with a glorious cover drive that even Mike Hussey at the other end would have been proud of. Hardly a tail-ender's shot.
Over 61 Khan 0-0-0-0-0-1b
180-8 - Zaheer gets proceedings underway with a few away swingers which hardly trouble James Pattinson who is able to leave rather easily. Khan ends the over with a wide one down leg which Dhoni cannot handle and they batsmen are able to sneak a run.
Ready to roll
All and sundry are out in the middle and James Pattinson will face up to the first delivery of the day as Hussey watches from the non-striker's end. India need these two wickets quickly and then hope that Virender Sehwag can get things off to a rollicking start.
Good morning everyone and welcome to day four of the first Test between Australia and India. It's been a very interesting Test match so far with the balance of power shifting to both teams on various occasions throughout the first three days. The hosts currently lead by 230 and have two second innings wickets in hand, but key man Mike Hussey is still at the crease and could push that lead past the 250-mark. There is plenty of sunshine in Melbourne so stay tuned for another sensational day of Test cricket.
