Australia vs Pakistan
Australia win by two runs
Phew, that was tight. In the end its more disappointment for Pakistan. The visitors haven't won a match on their entire tour Down Under. Pakistan did really well to restrict Australia to 127, putting in a great shift in the field. They looked good for periods with the bat, with the impetuous see-sawing from one team to the other. The Akmal brothers looked to have sealed the win but in the end fell just short. Shaun Tait was brilliant with ball for Australia, bowling with incredible accuracy and direction to match it. For Pakistan it's a long trip back home while Australia continue their international campaign with a five-match ODI series against the West Indies, starting n Sunday. Do join us then. Cheers.
Over 20 Watson W-1-1-0-1lb-4
125-9 - It's Shane Watson to bowl the final over. WICKET! Akmal goes for the big heave over long on that's been so successful, but he can't quite get hold of it and it's straight to Warner in the deep. Ajmal swings down to long on for a single. It's a short ball and Asif angles it wide of backward point for a single. A big swing and a miss from Ajmal. Going on the hook and Ajmal is hit on the shoulder, the ball runs down to third man and they pick up a leg bye. Six needed of the final ball to tie the game. Four runs but it's not enough! So close yet so far for Pakistan!
Over 19 Nannes 0-0-0-2-0-W
118-8 - Dirk Nannes returns to the attack. He starts with a good short ball. Another good short ball, the square leg umpire decides it wasn't over shoulder height though. Gul moves towards off and looks to hook into the leg side but he can't make contact. Just short! Gul slices the ball into the third man region, Tait comes in looking to take the catch but the ball drops short and they pick up two. A big swing and a miss from Gul. WICKET! Poor stuff from GUl as he moves way, way outside off, looking to help it round the corner, he gives Nannes a look at all three stumps and the bowler hits the target. Ten required with two wickets in hand.
Over 18 Smith 1-W-6-1-1-1
116-7 - Smith to continue. Tossed up and Umar prods it down the ground for a single.WICKET! Rana comes down the ground and has a massive heave, he misses it by a mile though and Haddin does the rest! Umar Gul goes after him first up, effortlessly heaving the ball over the long on fence for six! Knocked into the covers off the back foot and Gul picks up a single. Flicked in the leg side by Akmal but he only manages a single. Nudged to mid off for one more. Pakistan require a run a ball in the final two overs with three wickets still in the bag.
Over 17 Johnson 0-0-0-0-0-0
106-6 - Rana is cracked on the breast bone by a Johnson short ball; he's worn that awfully well, barely flinching. Good stuff from Johnson, not allowing Rana to get off strike. A maiden in the final flings of a twenty20 clash, amazing stuff.
Over 16 Smith 2-1-W-0-1-2
106-6 - An interesting move as Smith returns. Umar sweeps the ball out to midwicket and picks up two. One more to the total, driven down to long off. WICKET! Smith picks up his first wicket in international cricket! Draws the batsman forward and shapes away from him Fawad pushes at it and edges it to White at slip. Rana gets back and nudges the ball into the covers for a single. Flicked behind square and really well placed, allowing Umar to come back for the second.
Over 15 Tait W-0-0-0-1-1
100-5 - WICKET! Clarke turns to Tait and again the quick does the job for him, picking up the key scalp of Kamran. Johnson isn't made to pay for his job in the previous over as Kamran lofts the ball to Hussey at mid on, not quite getting enough elevation on it. A great knock from the 'keeper. Fawad Alam is the new man and he struggles to get Tait away initially, no need to panic though. He picks up a single, working the ball to third man. Umar angles a yorker wide of off stump down to third man for a single. That's the end of Tait's spell, a great exhibition of fast bowling.
Over 14 Watson 1-2-2-0-1-1
98-4 - Watson is back and oh so nearly picks up a wicket first up as Kamran chips a slower ball back down the ground, but Watson can't quite get up high enough to take the catch. Good running as the Akmal brothers pick up two as Umar angles the ball wide of third man. Great placement as Umar turns the ball into the leg side and rushes through for two. Nudged down to third man for a single. Dropped! Flicked out to Johnson at deep square leg who looks to have matters into control but somehow manages to drop a comfortable catch. Having done so well earlier to affect the run out, Johnson may just have cost Australia the match with that howler.
Over 13 Smith 1-0-4-2-2-1
91-4 - Cut to Tait at point who makes a good diving stop to keep them down to one. Driven inside out over the head of the man at extra cover, just avoiding the fielders outstretched hand. Pulled powerfully by Kamran and he picks up two. Nudged down to long no for two. Cut out to deep point for a single to end the over.
Over 12 Nannes 0-2-1-1-1-6
81-4 - Nannes is back. Ooh, that was lucky, pushing forward and Umar edges it wide of slip for two. Nudged wide of Warner at mid on by Umar he picks up one. Pulled out to deep square leg for a single to Kamran. Dabbed into the covers and Umar scurries through for the single. Another maximum over wide mid on from Kamran and that's his fifty, a superb knock.
Over 11 Smith 1-0-0-1-4-2
70-4 - Steven Smith enters the attack for the first time. Kamran goes after him immediately, cracking the ball into the off side and it reaches the cover sweeper on the one bounce. One more to the total as Umar nudges the ball round the corner. A bit of width and Kamran is onto it, showing great strength as he creates enough pace on the ball to beat the cover sweeper. Paddle round the corner by Kamran and he picks up two.
Over 10 Johnson 0-1lb-0-2-0-0
62-4 - Johnson returns, this time from the Southern End. Kmaran goes on the hook but misses; he's hit on the chest but manages to scamper through for a leg bye. Turned wide of Tait at fine leg, the batsmen sprint through for the second, it looks tight for a moment but the trough takes a bad bounce in front of Haddin.
Over 9 Tait 1lb-1-0-W-0-0
59-4 - Tait returns the fray. What was really impressive about his first spell was that his direction was really controlled, so often he is fast but all over the show, not tonight though he's been on target for the most part. WICKET! The change works, Malik is gone! An attempted Yorker that turned into a low full toss and Malik chips it to Birt at midwicket. Umar has a nibble at one outside off but is beaten or pace.
Over 8 Watson 1-1-1-4-4-0
57-3 - Pushed to the left of mid off by Mailk and he trots through for a single. Kamran drives out to the cover sweeper for one more. Malik cracks a cut into the off side but straight to the man in the deep. Super shot from Kamran, he swivels and dispatches a pull over wide mid on for four. Another boundary! Kamran goes hard at that one hammering a cut behind square.
Over 7 Johnson 1-0-0-1-0-0
46-3 - Kamran tucks the ball round the corner for a single. Well bowled by Johnson, tucking Malik up with a bit of well directed bounce, the skipper defends it onto his toes and some good awareness sees them pick up a quick single.
Over 6 Watson 0-0-W-0-0-0
44-3 - A double change with Shane Watson coming into the attack. A swing and a miss at one outside off from Latif. WICKET! Gone! A touch slower from Watson and Latif is hit on the pads looking to work the ball into the leg side and umpire Reiffel gives him his marching orders. A poor decision though, there was a big inside edge. Malik comes in ahead of Umar Akmal, a good move from the skipper, looking to take the responsibility himself. Having seen 20 runs clobbered of Johnson's over, Watson follows it up with a maiden wicket; good effort.
Over 5 Johnson 4-1-2-4-wd-2-6
44-2 - Tait takes a break and is replaced by Mitchell Johnson. A short ball first up and Latif is up to the task, hooking powerfully behind square for four. Another short ball, pinning Latif back in his crease, the batsman defends into the leg side and picks up a single. Akmal goes for the pull, he gets it on the toe end of the bat and the ball flies over the head of mid on, the ball is in the air for a long time but drops safely. Super shot from Kamran, pulling over wide mid on for four. Akmal drives through the line and lifts the ball over mid on four two more. Maximum! Another cracker from Kamran, Hoisting the ball sweetly down the ground for six!
Over 4 Nannes 0-3-1-4-2-4
24-2 - Kamran goes on the pull and picks up three, just not enough on it to find the boundary. Latif gets off the mark, working the ball to third man. Akmal isn't holding back; a good length ball from Nannes and Akmal stands tall and cracks the ball over a wide mid on. Ooh, that was close, slicing the ball over cover and only just out of reach of the shortest man on the field, David Warner. Along the ground this time, driven sweetly for four. A big over there for Pakistan.
Over 3 Tait 1-0-4-W-0-0
10-2 - Three slips in place. Yes, you read that correctly, three slips in a twenty20 game. Straying onto the pads and Akmal is able to deflect the ball away for a leg bye. A half volley and it is smashed through the covers and Farhat picks up four. WICKET! The slips come into play with Farhat edging behind to first slip as he looked to run the ball to third man!
Over 2 Nannes 0-0-0-0-W-0
5-1 - It's Nannes from the other end; he's no slouch either, starting off at just under 150km/h. This really is tough for the batsmen. WICKET! Desperate to get off the strike Nazir pushes the ball in the direction of mid off where Johnson swoops in and unleashes a ferocious direct hit; Nazir is short of his ground and Pakistan are one down.
Over 1 Tait 0-0-0-wd-4-0-0
5-0 - Wow, Tait has started off at 150km/h, that's incredible pace! Unbelievable, he's now topped 160km/h! Straying down the leg side and he concedes a wide. Farhat manages to get one away, pushing into the covers, he doesn't get enough on it to reach the fence but they manage to run for anyway.
Australia 127 all out
A great effort from Paksitan. They were sharp in the field, holding onto their catches and affecting run outs, something they haven't managed all summer. All the bowlers stuck to their tasks and really made life difficult for the Australian batsman. The home side will feel they should have done better, with no partnerships of substance in the innings. The pitch is hard and pacey which should aid the likes of Johnson, Nannes and Tait, but Pakistan have got themselves in prime position to take the win here.
Over 19 Gul 1-0-1-W
127 - Nearly another run out as Tait digs a Yorker out but then doesn't think of the single, his partner does and Hussey sprints down the track, there is a shy at the bowler's end and Tait would have been miles out had there been a direct hit. Hussey fends out another Yorker and there is a bit of stuttering as they consider the single, eventually deciding to go through with the run. WICKET! They're going to wish they hadn't taken it as Tait cuts the balls straight to the man at backward point.
Over 18 Ajmal 1-0-3-1W-0-6
125-9 - Worked down to long on for a single to Hussey. A slip comes into place with Nannes on strike. And he nearly comes into play as Nannes edges a doosra wide of the man close in and he picks up three. WICKET! Too short and Hussey swivels and pulls the ball wide of the man at deep square leg. It's Umar Akmal out there once more and again he fires in a great flat through to the bowler's end and Nannes is found short of his ground. It's hard to believe this is the same Pakistan team who have been so abysmal in the field! Big Hit from Hussey! Heaved over a wide long on for six, great stuff! It does mean Tait will have to face the next over though.
Over 17 Gul 1-W-1-4-2-1
114-8 - Hussey hammers the ball down the ground but it's only a single. WICKET! Another one gone! Johnson is cramped by a short delivery and the ball tickles his glove as he tries to take evasive action. Nannes turns the ball into the leg side for a single. Shot! With everything crumbling around him, Hussey reminds everyone he's still around, latching onto a bit of width and cutting powerfully behind square for four. Heaved down the ground, it's beautifully struck but Rana pulls off a great stop on the fence to cut off the boundary. French cut to deep square for a single to keep the strikes.
Over 16 Ajmal 1-0-0-0-2-0
105-7 - Ajaml is back. Hussey sneaks a quick single to short third man to get the over started. Johnson goes for the big heave across the line, he only manages to get an inside edge on it which somehow manages to evade the stumps.
Over 15 Naved-ul-Hasan 0-0-2-1-W-0
102-7 - Just one over from Ajmal with Rana Naved returning to bowl his final over. An attacking move from Malik, looking to deliver the killer blow by calling on his strike bowler. Hussey clips the ball wide of fine leg for two. Whacked down the ground for a single. WICKET! Brilliant ball from Rana Naved, an absolute cracker of a slower ball. It's 25-30km/h slower than his standard delivery and Smith has no clue, playing all around it before seeing his stumps rearranged.
Over 14 Malik 1-0-4-1-6-1
99-6 - Smith gives himself room and looks to crack the ball square of the wicket but can't make contact. Much better from Smith next up as he strikes the ball inside-out over cover for four. Turned into the leg side for a single. Huge it from Hussey, coming down the track and heaving the ball over the wide long on fence. Dabbed down the ground for a single to end the over.
Over 13 Ajmal 1-1-1-0-1-0
86-6 - Spin from both ends with Saeed Ajmal joining the attack. Smith picks up one more, angling the ball wide of short third man. One more to Hussey, nudged down the ground. Rotating the strike well as Smith cuts to deep point for one. Good bowling from Ajmal as he gets one to spin and bounce into Hussey.
Over 12 Malik W-0-0-1-1-Wwd-1
82-6 - WICKET! Birt is gone second ball! Looking to paddle the ball round the corner, but he gets too far across and misjudges it and has his stumps disturbed as a result. Hussey angles the ball wide of short third man for a single. WICKET! Another one gone! Fired down the leg side as Haddin advances down the ground, Kamran whips off the bails in a flash and Haddin is short of his ground. The second of Australia's debutants, Steve Smith, trots out to the crease. He gets off the mark first up, turning the ball into the leg side for a single.
Over 11 Gul 1-0-1-1-W-1
78-4 - Another single, and again it's picked up down the ground. Gul gets one to jag back at White who manages to defend the ball into the off side. Straying onto leg and Hussey dabs the ball behind square for a single. WICKET! Great delivery from Gul, serious pace on that one, White is cramped and the ball flies out t the man at point who hurtles in a throw and the stumps, he finds the target and White is short of his ground! Travis Birt walks out to the crease, this is his international debut. He's off the mark immediately - that should calm some nerves - pushing the ball down the ground for a single.
Over 10 Malik 1-0-1-1-1-0
74-3 - Nudged down the ground by White, one run results. Hussey works it to long on for another single. Prodded to mid off for a single, with the man at extra cover running round to do the fielding. One more down the ground, they're working in singles at the moment.
Over 9 Gul 1-1-1-W-0-wd-1
70-3 - Umar Gul will take up the attack from the Member's End. Hussey top edges a pull; he doesn't get hold of it at all which in the end is a good thing as it falls short of the man rushing in from the deep. One more to Clarke, angled to short third man. Hussey looks to turn the ball into the leg side but gets a leading edge and manages to pick up a single. WICKET! The big fish is sent packing, Clarke is gone! The Aussie skipper cuts with great venom but hits it straight to the man at backward point who takes a good catch, it really rocketed to him. Gul strays down the leg side and is correctly wided. White gets off the mark, working the ball to deep point for a single.
Over 8 Malik 4-1-1-2-1-1
65-2 - We have the first bowling change of the match, with the skipper Shoaib Malik joining the attack. Clarke comes down the track and lifts the ball over extra cover for four. One more to Clarke, worked down to long on. Hussey chops the ball to point for a single to get off the mark. Great running from Clarke as he finds the gap wide of point and hurries through for the second. Clarke gives himself room and cuts the ball to short third man for one. One more to Hussey, nudged into the leg side.
Over 7 Asif 1-0-1-2-W-1
55-2 - Asif is going to bowl out is compliment. Nudged wide of point by Warner and he picks up a single. Clarke is struggling a touch against Clarke; he's being drawn onto the front foot and beaten. Pushed down the ground for a single. Warner goes hard and straight, but there is protection at long on so it's just two. WICKET! Some width from Asif and Warner goes after it, he cuts powerfully but hits it straight down the throat of the man at deep point. Clarke clips the ball behind square for a single to end the over and Asif's spell.
Over 6 Naved-ul-Hasan 1-2-1-3-1-1
50-1 - Mid on has gone back to the fence for Warner. The Aussie dabs it into the covers for a single. Clarke works the ball wide of third man for two. Ooh, another risky single as Clarke drops the ball into the covers and scampers through for the run, a direct hit would have seen him out by a mile. A slower ball and Warner slices it over the off side inner ring and picks up through.
Over 5 Asif 0-2-1-6-1-0
41-1 - Clarke moves towards off stump and turns it into the leg side for two. Clarke drops the ball into the covers and scuttles through for the single. Super shot from Warner! He leans back, swivels and heaves the ball over the midwicket fence for a maximum. A leading edge from Warner as he looks to work the ball into the leg side but manages to pick up a single.
Over 4 Naved-ul-Hasan 1-0-1-1-2-1
31-1 - Warner goes for a heave across the line and slices the ball down to third man, it's in the air for some time but Asif decides against diving forward for him. Clarke nudges the ball out to deep square leg for a single. A flat pull from Warner heralds a single. A slower ball and it's turned into the leg side, they sprint through for the second, it's a got flat throw from Umar and he nearly affected another run out.
Over 3 Asif 1-4-0-0-2-2
25-1- Warner clips the ball into the on side for a single. Clarke cracks the ball through point for four, too wide from Asif. The skipper clips the ball wide of mid on and some good running from Warner allows them to pick up two. Two more to the total, again finding some space in the leg side.
Over 2 Naved-ul-Hasan 0-1-0-4-W-2
16-1 - Rana Naved will share the new ball with Asif. He strays down leg but Watson can only get a pad on it, Kamran makes a diving stop to his left to prevent the batsmen scuttling through for a leg bye. A single to Watson as he nudges the ball to third man. Watson is away immediately, cracking a square drive to the fence. Too much width there from Rana. WICKET! Suicidal running from Watson costs him his wicket! Warner cut the ball through the inner ring but didn't get enough on it to reach the boundary, they ran through easily for two and Watson decided to risk coming back for the third. A good throw in from the deep by Umar Akmal finds the batsman short. Clarke gets off the mark, working the ball into the midwicket region.
Over 1 Asif 0-4-0-0-2-1
7-0 - Mohammad Asif will get the ball rolling for Pakistan. Over the top and Watson opens his account with a boundary. Watson went hard at it, upper cutting the ball over the head of slip. There is certainly some pace in the wicket; it's a very hard deck. Watson goes on the pull but doesn't get hold of it, the ball skies high into the leg side, but he manages to bisect the men at short fine leg and deep square leg. Turned into the leg side for a single to end the over.
