Australia vs Pakistan

Hauritz hammers Pakistan

Aussie spinner stars with the bat as hosts head towards series whitewash

Last Updated: 29/01/10 6:31pm

Australia continued their domination over Pakistan with a crushing 135-run in the fourth ODI in Perth.

Fourth One-Day International Perth Australia 277-8 (M Hussey 67, N Hauritz 53 no) v Pakistan 142 all out (U Akmal 38, R Harris 5-19) Australia beat Pakistan by 135 runs

Pakistan were right in the game when they had Australia at 77-3 and then at 110-4, but spinner Nathan Hauritz launched a scintillating late attack to boost the innings up to 277-8 at the close.

Mike Hussey compiled a solid 67 but Hauritz surprisingly stole the show when he came in and launched four sixes in a blazing final ten overs to blast the game well away from the tourists.

Already 3-0 down and facing an unlikely victory target, Pakistan again crumbled from the very start and only Umar Akmal could get beyond the 30 mark as they were skittled out for just 142 inside 38 overs.

Ryan Harris continued his fine form as he recorded brilliant figures of 5-19 from 9.5 overs, while Peter Siddle added two as he returned from a back injury to help Australia to a 4-0 lead, one win away from a series whitewash.

Slow start

Australia made an ordinary start, with Brad Haddin looking good until he was bowled by a Rana Naved Yorker after belting 32 from 26 balls, and the innings slowed up from then on.

Ricky Ponting and Cameron White put on 44 before the skipper went for 30, leaving White and Hussey to rebuild the innings - which they did at a pedestrian pace to say the least.

Hauritz arrived with the score on 190-6 in the 40th over, meaning Pakistan actually had a foothold in the game, but the spinner showed a rare streak of brutal hitting as he smashed the game in Australia's favour.

Hauritz helped Australia add 87 in the final ten overs, as he took advantage of the final powerplay to smash an unbeaten 53 from just 39 balls, with Hussey taking a back seat in their partnership of 80.

Hussey went in the penultimate over and Mohammad Asif completed his return of 3-42 when getting rid of Harris for four, but Hauritz had done the damage with his exhilarating and surprising display with the bat.

Run chase

Having claimed 5-43 in Adelaide on Tuesday, Harris again gave the Australian selectors pause for thought ahead of the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies.

Harris got rid of opener Salman Butt for a duck, and Younis Khan followed in Harris' third over, leaving the Queenslander with figures of 2-0 from 13 balls.

Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Yousuf threatened to steady the ship, but the returning Siddle had Kamran caught behind off the third ball of a productive 10th over, before repeating the dose to Yousuf just two balls later.

On 39-4 Pakistan's chances had already gone, but Umar at least made a decent stand of 38 before he fell victim to Harris as he was brought back into the Australian attack.

Rana went the very next ball and the dangerous Shahid Afridi fell to Clint McKay in the next over after bludgeoning 29 from just ten balls - 17 of them from one Hauritz over.

Hauritz grabbed the wicket of Saeed Ajmal and aptly enough it was Harris who ended it by completing his five-for, with Rao Iftikhar Anjum spectacularly caught by a diving Brad Haddin.
