David Wainwright: Took five for 51 as Derbyshire beat Glamorgan at Derby

Derbyshire went back to the top of the LV= County Championship Division Two with a crushing eight wicket victory over Glamorgan at Derby.

Only Will Bragg offered any resistance - notching 78 - as Glamorgan's fragile batting collapsed to 188 all out in their second innings.

The spin of David Wainwright, who took five for 51, and Wes Durston's three for 43 did the damage, with the hosts then hitting 72-2 in less than 13 overs to seal the win.

Martin Guptill with 30 from 23 balls and an unbeaten 21 from Paul Borrington earned the 23-point victory with a day to spare, while Glamorgan are rooted to the bottom.

The visitors' chances of making a fight of it looked good when they wiped out Derbyshire's lead of 119 with only three wickets down but they crumbled on a pitch taking turn and lost their last seven wickets for only 65 runs.

Earlier, Derbyshire had also lost cheap wickets in the morning when the pace of Hugh Waters and Simon Jones ran through the tail leaving skipper Wayne Madsen stranded on 130 not out.

Day Two

Martin Guptill took full advantage of Glamorgan's generosity to score his second century of the season and put Derbyshire in a strong position on day two of the County Championship match at Derby.

The New Zealand Test opener was dropped three times on his way to 132 and added 170 for the second wicket with skipper Wayne Madsen, who was unbeaten on 122 as the home side closed at 335-5 in their first innings, a lead of 99.

Although former Derbyshire player Marcus North took 3-40 with his off-spin, Glamorgan's injury-depleted attack struggled on a good pitch and Guptill punished them by completing a hundred between lunch and tea.

Debutant seamer Mike Reed (2-66) claimed his first Championship victims but the bowlers failed to build up any sustained pressure which allowed the home side, who resumed on 22-0 at the start of the day, to dominate proceedings after light rain delayed the start by 75 minutes.

Day One

Marcus North came to Glamorgan's rescue with a defiant half-century against one of his former employers on the opening day of the LV= County Championship match against Derbyshire.

North, who is the first overseas player to play for six counties, top-scored with 75 and led a recovery that earned Glamorgan a first batting point of the season after they had been in trouble at 111-5.

The 32-year-old Australian left-hander batted for nearly four hours and was well supported by skipper Mark Wallace, who made 45 out of a team total of 236 as Tim Groenewald finished with excellent figures of 3-34 for the hosts.

Glamorgan would have expected more after electing to bat first but it gave former England paceman Simon Jones something to bowl at in his first Championship match for the Welshmen since August 2007, and he sent down four overs as Derbyshire reached the close on 22-0.

Besides North and Wallace, opener was the only other Glamorgan batsman to make a significant contribution as he scored 30 before becoming the first of Ross Whiteley's two victims.

Jonathan Clare took the opening two wickets of the day and, like Groenewald, would end up with three wickets (3-45), removing last man Jones before Martin Guptill (13 not out) and Paul Borrington (six not out) saw Derbyshire through a tricky eight-over spell for the loss of no wickets.
