India vs S Africa
The Indians were better in all departments despite a brave fight at the death by the South African batsmen. Raina played a stunning knock to set up the win and the Indian spin bowlers were easily more effective than their South African fast bowling counterparts. Thanks for joining us and we look forward to welcoming you back shortly as Australia start their World Twenty20 campaign against reigning champions Pakistan right here in St Lucia.
Over 20 Nehra 1-3-0-W-1-4
172-5 - After a single and then three runs, Ashish Nehra is floored in comical fashion, with the return throw finding his mid-drift. That's the highlight of a final over well bowled by the left arm seamer. De Villiers is dissmissed for a quickfire 31 and a Duminy four from his first and only delivery leaves South Africa 14 runs short.
Over 19 Pathan 6-1-W-4-6-1
163-4 - A massive six, all of 104 meters from Albie Morkel, the biggest so far in this years tournament, adding respectability if nothing else to the South African total. He then holds out to Harbhajan Singh and is out for 12. De Villiers adds two hefty blows, one clearing the fence, leaving 24 to get from the final over and De Villiers himself will be on strike.
Over 18 Nehra 1-1-1-1-1-2nb-1
144-3 - Nehra is doing a top job getting the ball in at a great length that both batsmen are finding difficult. The Aussies have arrived and are watching on with even a free hit not fetching more than a single. A largely improbable 43 runs required now from just 12 balls.
Over 17 Chawla 1-1-W-0-6-2
136-3 - Wicket! That's a major blow to South Africa's chances. Chawla has done the trick and got Kallis caught at mid-on. Top knock from Kallis despite his sluggish start. AB DeVilliers tries a silly scoop, and misses, and then hits a far more effective and aesthetically pleasing drive for six. The scoop clearly not the way to go on these slower pitches. 51 needed from 18 with Albie Morkel at the wicket.
Over 16 Jadeja 6-1-1,W-1-1-6
126-2 - Such poor running from Smith, turning for the second he's dawdled through and been caught short of his ground this time, so no, the previous run out miss will not cost India. Kallis just before had launched a 92 meter six and De Villiers too hit a maximum to leave 61 to get from 24 balls...
Over 15 H. Singh 1-6-6-1-1-1
110-1 - Finally Kallis has opened up! Two consecutive sixes over the on-side fence. Desperate running from the batsmen has Smith stranded but Harbhajan is unable to gather behind the stumps whit Smith having giving up hope, a lucky escape for the South African skipper. Will it cost India?
Over 14 Jadeja 1-0-1-6-1-1
94-1 - Smith launches for six in a brief moment of hope for his side. Kallis meanwhile reaches his half century off 45 balls, just not quite quick enough in the situation and he will have to start chancing his arm a little more.
Over 13 H. Singh 1-1-1-2-2-1
84-1 - After 13 overs India were 96 for two, so South Africa not all that far behind on simple comparison, but to be honest India are in control of this match. Just ones and twos once more against Harbhajan Singh.
Over 12 Jadeja 0-1-0-0-2-4
76-1 - With the run rate over 14 now some risks have to be taken, there's firepower in this Protea's lineup yet but nothing is happening at the moment. Kallis finishes the over with what feels like a token four. Comparatively though South Africa not all that far behind where India were at the same stage.
Over 11 Chawla 2-1-6-1-1-1
69-1 - Six! Greame Smith finally gets one away, good clean hit over mid-on.The jury is still out over the Mishra-Chawla spin debate, this is Chawla's chance to prove why he's first choice. That's a better over from South Africa and they want to build on it.
Over 10 Jadeja 0-1-0-2-0-1
57-1 - The fourth Indian spinner is into the attack with the Pakistan team watching from the sidelines, they've got a crunch game against the Aussies later on today. Great over from Jadeja. You would have expected South Africa to have come harder in the early overs and they are playing some serious catch up now.
Over 9 Pathan 1-0-1-4-1-1
53-1 - Pathan gets another and why not, South Africa are really struggling to get the ball away. Smith's timing is not quite there despite his attempt to be innovative and move his feet. Kallis in top nick does manage to find the fence to edge the score past fifty.
Over 8 Chawla 1-0-1-b-2-1
46-1 - Another Indian spinner into the attack and it's a man with a point to prove. The Indian leg-spinner has made a solid start, just six off his first over. The run rate is up over 11 now and drifting further away from the Proteas.
Over 7 Pathan 1-1-0-4-1-0
39-1 - It seems the only way to fetch boundaries is off the edge, a thick edge from Smith the first four since the first over.
Over 6 Nehra lb-1-2-1-2-0
32-1 - The slowness of the outfield thwarts a good stroke from Smith heading to the boundary. One's and two's the staple diet of runs at the moment. We know what form Kallis is in of late and it'll be interesting to see what sort of touch Smith can produce after his enforced break.
Over 5 Pathan 2-1-1-W-3-1
25-1 - Another off-spinner of different variety into the attack, and it does for Bosman who can only spoon one into the covers and is out for eight. Biff has a huge knock to play here. Jacques Kallis meanwhile is loving the sweep as his main weapon against the offspinners.
Over 4 Nehra 0-1-1-1-0-1
17-0 - Just one over for Kumar however. The batsmen appear to be feeling the weight of a hefty target and are forcing it slightly with only singles on hand at present. Nehra keeps a tight line and he's gone for just four in his first over. Pressure building on the Proteas.
Over 3 Singh 0-0-1-0-1-1
13-1 - Dhoni's approach is also different to Smith in that he is giving his opening bowlers more than one over. One the spot from the classy Singh who decieves Bosman in a very good over.
Over 2 Kumar 0-1-1-1-
10-0 - Bosman will be the main aggressor but is battling to time it so far. Kumar has the fine leg up and a man back on the square leg fence. A run out attempt is referred to the third umpire after outstanding fielding but Kallis is safely in his ground.
Over 1 Singh 0-1-0-0-1-4
6-0 - So Smith should appear at three. Singh will benefit from the bounce and sees Kallis dropped by Pathan second delivery in what was a tough chance. The South African Allrounded then shows intent with a sweep for four.
Proteas set to go...
The South African batsmen are, much to everyone's surprise, Loots Bosman and Jacques Kallis, captain Smith not opening. India spring a surprise of their own with Harbhajan Singh taking the new ball.
Suresh Raina in the post innings interview has praised his mother for his six-hitting power. His knock the obvious stand-out with decent support from Yuvraj and a couple of clean hits from Dhoni at the end. A pleasure to witness the third T20I hundred in the format's history. Steyn was the pick of the bowlers going for 24 off his four and taking the wicket of Pathan while his opening partner Kleinveldt received a pasting, one over in particular going for 24. Graeme Smith's approach was to use his fast men, only one over of spin from Van der Merwe. It'll be interesting to see how the Indian attack, well stocked with spinners, goes on this wicket.
Over 20 A. Morkel 4-1-6-W-2-6
186-5 - After six weeks of Super Kings' net practice Dhoni finds Albie Morkel's bowling rather enticing. He takes a boundary before maturely giving Raina the strike who goes to 100! in style! Six runs for Raina. Marvellous hundred! He's out next ball but it matters little after such a quality knock, 101 coming off only 61 balls. Dhoni rocks back in his crease to power a six from the last delivery of the innings.
Over 19 Steyn 1-1-W-1-2-1
167-4 - The Indian dressing room is understandably jovial. Respite for South Africa comes with Pathan's wicket, caught off a Steyn slower ball. There have only been two Twenty20 international hundreds, Raina is five runs short of the thrid, with Dhoni on strike and 6 balls remaining...A decent over from Steyn bringing a stop to the madness of the previous one.
Over 18 Kleinveldt 6-1-4-4-4-6
161-3 - One wonders why Smith has persisted here with Kleinveldt, he had a rough last over and the skipper has other bowling options available. Pathan goes bang for six, and Raina then butchers three consecutive boundaries, and another Six! 25 from that over! Can't say Smith couldn't see that coming. Raina now has the highest score by an Indian player at a World Twenty20 tournament.
Over 17 M. Morkel 1-w-1-1-4-1-1
136-4 - Yusuf Pathan has joined Raina., bearing some impressive facial hair. With fine leg up, down the leg side is not where you want to bowl and Morkel is duly dispatched for four. Expect a short approach from South Africa against Pathan. And it works, Pathan mis-timing a hook but the balls falls safely, somehow, just next to the wickets at the bowlers end.
Over 16 Kleinveldt 1-1-6-1-W-6
126-4 - That is huge!Raina picks a slower ball and deposits it deep into the St Lucia crowd. His partner Yuvraj has shown positive intent but...Wicket!...Yuvraj tries one shot too many and is caught by Smith, huge relief for the Proteas. Raina's not fazed however and takes another six off a Kleinveldt full toss. 88 runs that partnership in just about 10 overs.
Over 15 Steyn 1-0-1-4-0-1
111-2 - Fifty for Suresh Raina! Coming off 42 balls he's given India a solid platform to take on the big onslaught of the final couple of overs. He's getting back in his crease as far as possible which works in flaying Steyn for four over the offside. Pressure is firmly on the South African bowlers now.
Over 14 M. Morkel 4-0-1-1-1-1
104-2 - The second Indian fifty has come off just 28 balls. AB de Villiers misses a golden opportunity, his shy going wide with Raina stranded. If these two stay around much longer we'll be in for a large total here.
Over 13 Steyn 0-4-1-1-0-1
96-2 - Smith is resisting the use of his spin options, particularly with two left-handers at the wicket against the left-arm spin of Van der Merwe. Yuvraj looks a different player to the one we saw in the IPL, backing away and timing Steyn over the covers for four. Seven from that over, this partnership is moving along well for India, 64 off 45 balls now, a worry for South Africa.
Over 12 Kallis 1-1-1-0-w-4-1
89-2 - With the slow outfield Smith has his men right back on the ropes allowing easy twos, as opposed to Dhoni yesterday who had his fielders a couple meters inside the fence to cut down the runs. Kallis is keeping it short to Yuvraj who disdainfully lets the bowler know whaat he thinks swatting it out to midwicket for four.
Over 11 A. Morkel 0-4-0-2-1-6
80-2 - Raina has supreme timing, guiding Morkel past third man for four, his strength is his timing and sometimes he seems to force it too much. Boucher is standing up to the wicket due to Raina's explorative footwork. Yuvraj in vitage style doesn't need any footwork as he flicks Morkel for Six! down the leg side.
Over 10 Kallis 6-0-0-2-2-1
67-2 - India just starting to take the initiative at the moment, Raina lifting Kallis for Six. Raina is showing more intent, much to the disgust of the bowler, Kallis muttering as Raina launches into a wild swing and the ball falls short of the fielder on the legside boundary.
Over 9 Van der Merwe 2-4-1-0-6-0
56-2 - It's the first over of spin and India look far more comfortable against the left arm spin of Van der Merwe than any of the quicker stuff. Raina backs inside-out for a classy four and Yuvraj takes the first Six! of the innings.
Over 8 Kallis 0-0-1-1-1-1
43-2 - Not easy to hit through the line on this pitch, which Yuvraj discovers as Kallis continues to keep it short of a length, India are being given nothing full to hit. Gary Kirsten is in the Indian change room with paper and pen, trying to work out what a decent total will be in the conditions.
Over 7 Kleinveldt 0-0-0-2-1-0
39-2 - Smith is continuing his rotation policy, and it seems to be working. Yuvraj has come in and is given little to work with by Kleinveldt. Plenty of running between the wickets needed here with the outfield being so thick. Top over from Kleinveldt.
Over 6 Kallis 1-1-W-0-4-0
36-2 - Wicket! As he does so often Kallis comes into the attack with his golden arm and takes a wicket. Frustrated by the sluggish runrate Kartik comes down the wicket but is undone by the bounce and can't clear Smith at mid-on. Raina then gets a thick outside edge for four and the fielding restrictions are now over.
Over 5 Morkel nb-2-1-1-0-0-4
30-1 - Raina spoons a catch to mid-off but it's a no ball from Morkel! Costly overstep. The free hit is hit high but comes down short of the boundary. Just as it's looked to be a decent over Morkel has strayed and it's four for Raina, that not the first time that that has happened already today.
Over 4 A. Morkel 0-1-4-0-2-0
21-1 - Steyn gets only one over in his first spell, Smith might have left him on for at least one more in search of another early strike. Albie Morkel replaces him, interesting to see him facing his Chennai mate Suresh Raina. Kartik gets four off a fortunate inside edge before a beaituful drive down the ground for a couple.
Over 3 Morkel w-0-0-0-0-0-4
14-1 - Morkel is into the attack to try and make the most of the bounce in this St Lucia wicket. Two slips still in place. Kartik is happy to leave with Morkel seaming the ball dangerously, great control from the tall South African until it drags one short last delivery and Kartik says thank you very much and helps himself to the first boundary of the day.
Over 2 Steyn 0-0-2-1-1-0
9-1 - Steyn is on the mark from the start, he'll be key in these conditions, then getting one slightly too full which is driven by Raina but holds up before the boundary, this outfield is rather slow and will keep a handle on the boundaries hit today.
Over 1 Rory Kleinveldt w-3-W-0-1-0-0
5-1 - Full of action from the start - Kleinveldt begins nervously with a wide, AB De Villiers misses a run out, with both batsmen at one end the result is instead three overthrows as De Villiers shies and misses, before Gone!, that's the end of Vijay, caught by Boucher! Smith is going hard early on with two slips waiting to profit from the swing available.
Here we go...
It's Rory Kleinveldt to start with replacement Dinesh Kartik taking the first ball. Game on...
India - Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra
South Africa - Graeme Smith, Loots Bosman, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher, Albie Morkel, Roelof van der Merwe, Rory Kleinveldt, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel
Graeme Smith says his players are feeling relaxed and whatever the target set by India, that his side have the batters to chase it down. Dhoni meanwhile feels the Indians have an advantage after getting used the conditions of the ground yesterday.
India make two changes from yesterday's stroll against Afghanistan. Gautam Gambhir has Diarrhea and is replaced by Dinesk Kartik and the spin of Piyush Chawla is preferred to the pace of Zaheer Khan. For the Proteas Langeveldt, , Botha, Gibbs and Theron sit out.
Graeme Smith has won the toss and decided that the Proteas will field first. It's an early morning game and the South African skipper is expecting the ball to swing early doors. MS Dhoni concurrs that he too would have chosen to have a bowl had he won the toss.
Hello and welcome to St Lucia for India against South Africa. While the result will ultimately be academic, the clash should provide a fantastic test of both teams tournament winning credentials.
