West Indies have suffered a blow ahead of the first of five ODIs against New Zealand with the news batsman Marlon Samuels has been ruled out with an injured wrist.
Samuels will return home to see if surgery is required on his right wrist, with Chadwick Walton called in as cover for the clash at Auckland's Eden Park on December 26.
Samuels' absence is in a major blow for the tourists as they look to bounce back from their recent 2-0 Test series defeat to the Black Caps.
Head coach Ottis Gibson said: "Marlon's injury is unfortunate at such a tough time for the team, but it gives another player the opportunity to make a name for themselves in this series."
Gibson added 28-year-old Walton, who has played just two ODI back in 2009, has been travelling with the team and would relish any chance he was offered.
"He has been working hard and growing as a player, and I feel confident that when his opportunity comes he will make the most of it," the coach said.
Meanwhile, Jesse Ryder is back for New Zealand after the big-hitting 29-year-old ended his self-imposed exile from the team.
Ryder, who averages 34.27 in 33 ODI innings, had made himself unavailable for international selection to sort out personal issues but has been named in the 13-man squad.
He said: "I set the goal to make it back earlier this year and it is a great end to a tough year for me. I'm more motivated than ever."
Martin Guptill also returns after missing the tour of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka through injury, while pace bowler Tim Southee has been included despite the fact he will miss the first two games as he needs treatment on a toe injury.
