NatWest Pro40 - Division Two
Surrey Brown Caps 134 v Northamptonshire Steelbacks 135-2 (N J O'Brien 81 no)
Northamptonshire beat Surrey by 8 wkts
Niall O'Brien smashed an unbeaten 81 off 46 balls as Northamptonshire chased down a meagre victory target of 134 to claim an eight-wicket victory over Surrey in Pro40 Division Two.
O'Brien hit 12 fours and three sixes to power the Steelbacks across the winning line with 24.3 overs to spare at Wantage Road.
After the early loss of Stephen Peters, caught behind for seven off Jade Dernbach's bowling, O'Brien shared a second-wicket alliance of 65 with Andrew Hall.
Hall was stumped for 21 off leg-spinner Chris Schofield with 42 still required but Riki Wessels (9no) joined O'Brien to see the hosts home without further loss.
Surrey had earlier been skittled for 134 in 35.2 overs with only three batsmen making it into double figures.
David Lucas (3-43) and Johan van der Wath (2-21) reduced Surrey to 46-5 before a 58-run, sixth-wicket stand between Matthew Spriegel and Rangana Herath briefly revived the innings.
But Spriegel (18) and Herath (39) both fell with the score on 104 and the tail quickly subsided, leaving Tim Linley stranded on 17.
