NatWest Pro40 - Division Two
Yorkshire Phoenix 182-8 (G L Brophy 59) v Northamptonshire Steelbacks 178-10 Innings Complete (D J G Sales 88, G J Kruis 4-32)
Yorkshire beat Northamptonshire by 4 runs
Yorkshire Phoenix secured promotion to the top flight of the NatWest Pro40 with a nail-biting four-run success at the Northamptonshire Steelbacks on the final day of the season.
Chasing a target of 183, David Sales looked to have steered the winless hosts towards victory with an innings 88 before a late collapse, initiated by fast bowler Deon Kruis' four wickets in 15 balls, saw them fall short.
Opener Sales was the last man out, bowled by Kruis (4-32), having faced 99 balls and hit 10 fours and two sixes.
The result allowed Yorkshire to take advantage of Kent's defeat to champions Essex and claim the second automatic promotion spot.
Earlier, Yorkshire wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy had top-scored with 59 as the visitors totalled 182-8 after opting to bat first.
Brophy's half-century was a rare highlight as his team-mates struggled to dominate against some tight bowling, led by Northants skipper Nicky Boje's 3-34.
The Steelbacks started their reply confidently and after Niall O'Brien had gone for 24, Riki Wessels came in to join Sales.
Despite blasting Naved-ul-Hasan for four, Wessels' assault did not last much longer as he holed out to Tim Bresnan at mid-on for eight.
Rob White followed shortly after off the bowling of Naved, while Mark Nelson's 24 helped steady the innings.
Boje added 21 but after he was bowled by Naved (2-39) and then Kruis stepped up with his devastating burst.
Steven Crook went for a duck and both Monty Panesar (1) and David Wigley (0) had their stumps blasted out of the ground.
The South African brought proceedings to an abrupt end with the victory line in sight for Northamptonshire when he bowled Sales with the fourth ball of the 35th over.
