Pakistan vs W Indies

Last Updated: March 23, 2011 1:55pm

    Pakistan win by 10 wickets

Pakistan have crushed West Indies by 10 wickets in the first of the World Cup quarter-finals. It was all as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, Shahid Afridi claiming 4-30 as West Indies, who had opted to bat after winning the toss, were dismissed for 112 in 43.3 overs. Pakistan openers Mohammad Hafeez (61no) and Kamran Akmal (47no) knocked those off in 20.5 overs and their reward is a semi-final date with either India or Australia in Mohali on March 30. Thanks for your company and join us again tomorrow for more commentary on the second quarter-final, a mouthwatering clash between co-hosts India and three-time defending champions Australia in Ahmedabad. Play starts at 0900h (GMT).

  •

    Over 21 Roach 1-1-1-0-4

113-0 - Roach knows he is going down but is still keen to take someone with him, namely Hafeez, who is fortunate a top-edged pull falls safely behind square on the leg side. A couple more singles leave Pakistan needing needing four to win and Kamran finishes it in style with a boundary, threaded between point and cover. PAKISTAN WIN BY 10 WICKETS.

  •

    Over 20 Rampaul 0-3-0-0-0-4

106-0 - Good running turns a gentle push into the leg side from Hafeez into three, raising the 100 partnership in the process. Kamran whips a short ball off his hip to the square-leg boundary. Pakistan require seven off 30 overs. The end is nigh.

  •

    Over 19 Roach 4-0-0-0-0-0

99-0 - Roach bangs in a short ball to produce a rare moment of discomfort for Kamran, his top-edged pull still running away for four to fine-leg. Roach raises himself for one last effort, digging in a series of fast, short deliveries, including one that Kamran wears just above a delicate area after missing with his pull.

  • Gareth Price

"West Indies are so predictable. If Chris Gayle doesn't fire at the top of the order the team doesn't fire."

  •

    Over 18 Rampaul 4-4-0-0-0-0

95-0 - Pollard is still up for it though, sprinting after Hafeez's drive and putting in a full length dive in a forlorn attempt to stop the Pakistan opener bringing up his maiden World Cup half-century (55b, 9x4). He celebrates the landmark with another boundary, his 10th, pushed through the extra cover with the minimum of fuss.

  •

    Over 17 Roach 0-1-0-1-0-0

87-0 - Roach also returns for a final thrust. Kamran deflects a short ball into the leg side for a single and Hafeez also adds one with a drop-and-run on the off side to the total. Subdued would probably describe the feeling among the fielding side at the moment.

  •

    Over 16 Rampaul 0-0-0-0-0-0

85-0 - With 28 needed, Rampaul is back into the attack. There is a half-appeal for lbw against Hafeez but the ball was heading well past leg stump. Hafeez finds Pollard in the covers with a well-timed drive allowing Rampaul to complete a maiden.

  • Edward Piper

"This has been a great match for Pakistan and I think that they are the team to beat. All the hype is about India and their "big 4" at the top of the batting order but I think they are lacking in the bowling department. Afridi has been the bowler of the tournament and I expect him to by lifting the trophy!"

  •

    Over 15 Sammy 0-2-0-1-0-1

85-0 - Kamran follows his partner's lead with a delicate that adds two to the total. Are we seeing the last rites of Sammy's reign as captain, I would think so...

  •

    Over 14 Bishoo 4-0-1-0-1-0

81-0 - Hafeez unleashes another of his late cuts and again picks up four for his troubles - high-class shot, even Bishoo seems impressed. Hafeez pushes forward to the next delivery and edges it just short of Gayle at slip before rotating the strike with a single down the ground. Kamran goes back, waits for the turn and drops a single into the off side. This is Pakistan's highest opening stand of the World Cup.

  •

    Over 13 Sammy 0-0-0-1-0-1

75-0 - No Pakistan opener has scored a half-century at this World Cup - that should change shortly. The top order was their only area of concern after topping Group A - this partnership will be particularly pleasing for the coaching staff.

  •

    Over 12 Bishoo 1-0-0-2-0-4

73-0 - A decent over is ruined by the final delivery, which is dropped in halfway down and Hafeez makes no mistake, pulling it to the midwicket boundary. He has 40 off 38 balls and will be eyeing a nice little half-century.

  •

    Over 11 Sammy 4-0-1-3-0-0

66-0 - Sammy strays onto the pads and Hafeez flicks it away for his sixth boundary. Kamran adds three more to the total with a push through mid-on. This is amazingly one-sided.

  •

    Over 10 Bishoo 0-0-3-0-0-0

58-0 - Hafeez steps down and lofts over mid-off for three - more of a nine iron than the seven iron he was looking for. Neither side wants to enforce their power play so the fielding restrictions will now be relaxed for the first time in the innings.

  •

    Over 9 Sammy 4-0-0-0-0-0

55-0 - Sammy drops short and wide with predictable consequences, Kamran threading the off-side field for another boundary.

  •

    Over 8 Bishoo 0-4-0-0-4-0

51-0 - Bishoo drags one down and Hafeez makes no mistake, waiting for the turn before smashing it to the backward point boundary. Hafeez adds a classy four later in the over, cutting late - very late - behind square. Pakistan require 62 runs from 42 overs.

  •

    Over 7 Sammy 0-0-0-0-0-0

43-0 - The skipper decides it's time to bring himself on. Can his medium pace save the day? Decent first over, good bounce from back of a length and Kamran can't pierce the infield with a succession of drives, including one where he shimmied down the pitch. Consecutive maidens - another 30 or so of those and the required-rate will become an issue.

  •

    Over 6 Bishoo 0-0-0-0-0-0

43-0 - We are in the sixth over of Pakistan's run chase and already West Indies captain Sammy is rolling the dice for probably the final time with the introduction of leg-spinner Bishoo. Hafeez gets well forward, getting his nose over the ball to block out a maiden. Good over but maidens are of no use to West Indies now - they need wickets.

  •

    Over 5 Roach 1-1-4-0-3-1

43-0 - Roach is also going for glory-ball yorkers - doesn't have much choice given the situation. Kamran's not bothered, launching a square drive with no foot movement at all for his third four. Three more follow to deep midwicket as Roach drifts into Kamran's pads. DROPPED! West Indies miss another chance, this time wicketkeeper Thomas fails to cling on one handed diving to his left after Hafeez gloves an attempted pull. Tough chance.

  •

    Over 4 Rampaul 1-0-0-0-0-2

33-0 - Rampaul goes wide of the crease and tries to spear in the yorker, Kamran is equal to the task, squeezing it out for a single. Hafeez is timing it beautifully - not something I've seen often over the years - and picks up another two with the cut.

  • Ian

"India v Australia - I still believe this is the game to watch of the week. Very difficult to make any predictions. (Hope India takes it away from Aus)." I fancy Australia in that one - India's batting is strong but their bowling - Zaheer Khan apart - and their fielding has been very average. Australia are in decline but they remain a tough outfit - you have to beat them, they won't be rolling over like West Indies today.

  •

    Over 3 Roach 0-4-0-0-0-1

30-0 - DROPPED! Kamran adds yet another boundary, although this one involves a touch of fortune as a screaming cut finds its way through Pollard's hands at backward point. Pollard is a sensational fielder but is struggling with a finger problem - he dislocated the little digit of his left hand during the India defeat and is wearing plenty of strapping on it today. Could explain that miss.

  •

    Over 2 Rampaul 4-4lb-0-wd-0-1-4

25-0 - Rampaul, fresh from his career-best haul of 5-51 against India, shares the new ball. Pakistan are not hanging around here, Kamran helps a gift on his hip for four leg byes and then drills the next one through the off side for another boundary. Hafeez also gets in on the act, clipping a full delivery from leg stump to the square-leg boundary. Pakistan are almost a quarter of the way to their target already. West Indies were into the 13th over of their innings before they had scored 25 runs.

  •

    Over 1 Roach 1-4-2-4-0-0

11-0 - Roach took 3-19 here against Bangladesh and has looked good throughout the tournament before missing the India defeat with a stomach infection. Kamran gets off the mark first ball by guiding down to third-man and Hafeez opens up with a boundary, smashing a short, wide offering through point. He almost repeats the dose but this time the third-man fielder is able to cut it off with a sliding stop. Roach overcompensates and Hafeez is able to drive between the bowler and mid-on for his second boundary.

  • Immy in London

"Should be an easy win for Pakistan ... emphasis on SHOULD! Every cricket fan knows what happens when Pakistan plays. lol. Make the most simple tast dramatic. Even if Pakistan were chasing 50, honestly I dont say its a definate until the match is over, it's just the way Pakistan is. Rampaul and Roach could cause some problems I feel. May not be as one sided as people think. In the end though ultimately Pakistan will be victorious. Whether its by 5 wickets or 3 wickets."

  • Crack

Stephen goes on to say: "I think the West Indies can do it if they bowl with aggression up front - Pakistan's batting is known to crack."

  • Proteas in bloom

Stephen Cox asks: "What do you think are the chances of South Africa beating New Zealand on Friday?" I expect them to win, although I believe the weather forecast is not great, which will cause a few nerves within Graeme Smith's squad (remember 2003 and the D/L sheet?). South Africa and Pakistan, the group winners, have certainly looked like the best teams so far. I have been very impressed with the Proteas spinners, lots of variety and cutting edge - they add an extra dimension to a team that is often accused of being too robotic in their approach.

  • Tanaka in Zimbabwe

"There's no way West Indies are going to pull this off.. They don't have the muscle...the game's going to Pakistan...."

  • Odds check

Our friends at Sky Bet make Pakistan 1/66 at the halfway point. West Indies are 14/1. Pakistan are 6/5 to score over 4.5 runs in the first over, worth a punt perhaps?

  •

    In a spin

Pakistan's spinners ran riot as West Indies collapsed to 112 all out after opting to bat first, the final total representing something of a recovery having been 71-8 at one point. Only Chanderpaul with a becalmed 44 not out provided much in the way of resistance, while the World Cup's leading wicket taker Afridi added another impressive haul of 4-30. West Indies don't have much to bowl at, although they did manage to dismiss Bangladesh for 58 on this ground earlier in the tournament. Can they repeat the trick this time, join us from around 1225h (GMT) to find out.

  •

    Over 44 Afridi 0-1-W

112ao - WICKET! The left-handed Rampaul is bowled behind his legs as he looked to sweep - a fittingly clueless way for West Indies' innings to end. Chanderpaul finishes unbeaten on 44 off 106 balls, having waged very much a lone battle. Afridi ends up with figures of 4-30 to take his tournament wicket tally to 21.

  •

    Over 43 Razzaq 0-W-0-0-0-0

111-9 - WICKET! Roach goes for a big drive but only picks out Younus at midwicket, bringing an end to a determined contribution of 16 off 43 balls in a ninth-wicket stand of 40. If nothing else he has helped avert complete meltdown. Last man Rampaul joins Chanderpaul in the middle and blocks solidly througout the remainder of the over.

  •

    Over 42 Afridi 1-1-0-1-0-1

111-8 - More like it as Afridi recalls himself to try and finish this off. With the field now spread far and wide there are plenty of singles on offer and West Indies help themselves to four without much risk.

  •

    Over 41 Razzaq 0-1lb-1-1-0-0

107-8 - Don't agree with Pakistan's tactic here, Afridi and Ajmal still have two overs each - there is no good reason why they shouldn't be bowling them at the moment. Roach turns a single into the leg side to move to 14, his highest ODI score.

  •

    Over 40 Gul 0-0-0-0-1-0

104-8 - Gul tries his luck from round-the-wicket to Chanderpaul, who is able to flick a single to fine-leg as the ball drifts into his pads. West Indies are treading a fine line at the moment, at some point they are going to have to try and up the tempo.

  •

    Over 39 Razzaq 0-1-0-0-wd-0-0

103-8 - First sighting of Abdul Razzaq's medium pace today. Accurate start but Roach continues to impress with his defensive techinique. Solid is the word that springs to mind. How many do you think West Indies can get up to? 150 plus?

  •

    Over 38 Gul 0-0-1-0-0-0

101-8 - Gul is back for his second spell and, for those who have backed him to be the tournament's leading wicket taker, hopefully on the hunt for a couple of cheap tail-end wickets. Chanderpaul remains content to take what is on offer, namely another single turned off his hip. Gul has got the ball (which was changed a few overs ago as per the ODI regulations) reverse swinging, including an attempted yorker down the leg side that, curiously, umpire Davis does not call as wide.

  •

    Over 37 Riaz 0-2-1-1-1-4

100-8 - Chanderpaul rides the bounce of a short ball, turning it to deep square-leg and hustling through for two. He punches a single down the ground. Roach edges another short delivery just out of the reach of the solitary slip Younus and finishes the over in fine style, flicking off his pads for a welcome boundary to bring up West Indies' 100. They still have the batting power play to use.

  •

    Over 36 Hafeez 1-0-0-0-0-0

91-8 - Just a single pushed to deep midwicket for Chanderpaul as Hafeez completes his allocation for figures of 2-16, including three maidens. The Professor has had all the answers today.

  •

    Over 35 Riaz 1-0-1lb-0-1-0

90-8 - Roach is unlucky as Misbah-ul-Haq pulls off a diving stop at extra cover after he middled a drive and then stood there holding the pose, high left elbow and all.

  •

    Over 34 Hafeez 0-0-2-0-1-0

87-8 - The man who started it all, Hafeez, returns to bowl his final two overs. Chanderpaul drags a short ball from well outside off stump into the leg side for a couple and then takes a single to leave Roach one ball to negotiate, which he does safely enough by getting well forward in defence.

  • Edward Piper

"Surely Chanderpaul has to go for it now... I'm a big fan of his and it's his chance to prove that it was a mistake to drop him and save the innings! With wickets tumbling around him big hitting is what is needed, the Windies won't see out the 50 overs!"

  •

    Over 33 Riaz 1-0-0-0-1-1

84-8 - Drinks prompts a change of bowling, Riaz returning for a second spell. Chanderpaul cuts a short ball for a single to bring Roach into the firing line. Roach stands tall in defence and then, when offered far too much width, is able to edge a drive along the ground to third-man for one. Chanderpaul keeps the strike with a single turned off the stumps to midwicket.

  •

    Over 32 Ajmal 0-0-0-0-1-0

81-8 - Normal service is resumed as Kamran fluffs a stumping chance from Chanderpaul, the ball cannoning from wrist into his chin. Younus then made an effort to catch the rebound at slip, he narrowly failed with a one-handed grab but I don't think there was an edge anyway. Ajmal is all over Chanderpaul, who fails to pick the doosra before eventually rotating the strike with a single into the leg side. Roach gropes and misses at another doosra to end the over. Ajmal is turning it the wrong way out of the front of his hand - very impressive.

  •

    Over 31 Afridi 4-0-0-0-1-1

80-8 - Afridi drags one down short and wide and Roach squirts it away for four with an edgy cut. Roach looks quite reasonable with the bat, working a single to square-leg. Chanderpaul mistimes a cut from the final ball but nevertheless collects a single to retain the strike.

  •

    Over 30 Ajmal 0-0-0-0-0-0

74-8 - Very odd as Chanderpaul now declines a single from the fourth ball. Perhaps there was a change of policy after a chat between overs. The result, anyway, is that Chanderpaul blocks the final two deliveries to leave Roach on strike at the start of the next.

  •

    Over 29 Afridi 1-0-0-0-0-2

74-8 - Chanderpaul is still plugging away, turning a single to midwicket at the start of the over to hand the strike to Roach - is that a good idea? Roach does well to jam his bat down on a yorker and grows in confidence as the over progresses, even managing to pick up a couple of leg-byes from the final ball.

  •

    Over 28 Ajmal 0-wd-W-0-0-W-0

71-8 - DROPPED! Sammy edges a defensive poke at Ajmal's doosra and Younus tumbles to his left at slip but can't hang on to a one-handed chance - very nearly a spectacular catch. WICKET! Ajmal doesn't need to worry though because he bags the West Indies skipper two balls later, plumb lbw. Sammy didn't really play much of a shot, just stood in front of his stumps and seemed surprised when the ball thudded into his pad. Probably the easiest lbw umpire Davis will ever have to give. WICKET! This is embarrassing to watch, Devendra Bishoo goes for a three-ball duck, bowled between bat and pad as he played well forward in defence. Roach plays and misses to finish a dramatic over. Can West Indies get to 100 from here?

  •

    Over 27 Afridi 0-0-1-wd-W-W-1

70-6 - WICKET! Pollard departs and, like Sarwan before him, it is to an ill-judged attempt to cut Afridi. The ball was too full for the shot and Pollard under-edged through to Kamran, who held the catch with ease. He waited for umpire Bowden's finger, which was duly raised and the walked off without complaint. WICKET! A rout is on the cards as Devon Thomas falls first ball, lbw playing back. Umpire Bowden can't get his finger up fast enough - as plumb as you like. Afridi on a hat-trick as Sammy walks out. Sammy survives, even managing to turn a single into the leg side - would have been close to being lbw if he'd missed though.

  •

    Over 26 Ajmal 6-1-0-0-0-0

67-4 - Wasn't expecting that from Chanderpaul - he gets down on one knee and slog sweeps for six. He then turns the strike over with a single driven down the ground. Apparently Sarwan has been out to his 68th ball in his last three innings - wow, what a stat.

  •

    Over 25 Afridi W-1-0-0-1-0

60-4 - WICKET! Sarwan tries one cut too many, the ball was quick and full and he only succeeds in looping it to Umar Akmal at backward point, who takes the catch in front of his face. Afridi celebrates in trademark fashion, arms outstretched and head thrust back. Kieron Pollard, the last of West Indies' recognised batsmen, strolls out in a floopy hat and gets off the mark immediately with a single to square-leg. Chanderpaul pushes a single to long-on later in the over.

  •

    Over 24 Ajmal 2-0-0-0-1-0

58-3 - Again Riaz is called into sweeping duty on the off side boundary, this time a diving stop keeps a well-timed cut from Sarwan down to two. Sarwan picks up another single, again with the cut, after picking Ajmal's doosra.

  •

    Over 23 Afridi 0-0-2-0-1-0

55-3 - Sarwan decides using his feet is the best way to go against Afridi. He dances down to drive and collects two, Riaz saving a couple of runs on the extra cover boundary with a good chase and strong throw. Sarwan comes down twice more, the first time is aborted into a defensive stroke, the second results in a driven single.

  •

    Over 22 Ajmal 0-0-0-1-1-0

52-3 - Chanderpaul is beaten outside off stump as he throws his hands into a cut - the first really aggressive shot he has tried. A couple of singles are worked, Chanderpaul turning the ball into the leg side and Sarwan cutting, to ensure the scoreboard ticks over, albeit very slowly.

  •

    Over 21 Afridi 1-0-0-1-1-0

50-3 - Sarwan appears obsessed with trying to cut Afridi - it is his favourite shot but fraught with danger against the Pakistan skipper's fast leggies. Nevertheless he does get it away for a single at the second attempt. Chanderpaul also picks up a couple of singles, one on either side of the wicket.

  •

    Over 20 Ajmal 0-2-0-0-0-1

47-3 - Chanderpaul, who was dropped after the first four group matches due to his poor form, is just starting to find his touch. He turns one into two with some good hustle after opening his wrists on a cover drive and retains the strike with a single turned to midwicket.

  •

    Over 19 Afridi 1-2-0-1-1-0

44-3 - DROPPED! Sarwan is given a life by Gul, who misjudges a chance after coming in from long-off. Sarwan advanced to drive but didn't get hold of it and Gul, had he moved forward earlier, would have had an easy catch. As it was, he had to dive forward at the last minute and the ball went through his hands.

  •

    Over 18 Ajmal 0-0-0-1-0-0

39-3 - Hafeez is taken out of the attack after claiming 2-12 in his eight-over opening spell. That's the good news for West Indies, the bad news is that Ajmal - a very similar bowler - is now on. Chanderpaul rotates the strike with a single into the covers and Sarwan ends the over by missing with a big attempted cut at a ball that was not short enough for the shot.

  •

    Over 17 Afridi 0-0-0-0-0-0

38-3 - REVIEW! Afridi brings himself into the attack and immediately asks for a review of umpire Bowden's decision to turn down an lbw appeal against Sarwan. Hawkeye shows it was marginal whether Sarwan was hit outside the line of off stump as he played a forward defence and, although the ball would have gone on to hit middle, the ruling on the field stands. Afridi launches into another vociferous lbw appeal to the next ball, this time Sarwan had taken a couple of steps down and Pakistan decline to use their final review. Looked straight enough.

  •

    Over 16 Hafeez 0-0-0-1-0-1

38-3 - West Indies are keeping the batting power play up their sleeve, therefore the fielding restrictions are relaxed for the first time. The Professor continues after drinks and there is a single apiece on the leg-side for Sarwan and Chanderpaul. There have been 19 previous day-nighters here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and 14 have been won by the team chasing. The average score batting first in those games was 243.

  •

    Over 15 Riaz 0-0-0-1nb-1-wd-0-0

36-3 - With Chanderpaul having dropped anchor, the onus is on Sarwan to keep the scoreboard moving. He's doing his best but again finds the fielder with a drive. Riaz oversteps but Chanderpaul can only cut the subsequent free-hit for a single. Riaz throws in another wide, he doesn't look too comfortable from round-the-wicket.

  •

    Over 14 Hafeez 0-0-0-0-0-0

32-3 - Chanderpaul is yet to play an attacking stroke, he blocks out another Hafeez maiden and now has two off 25 balls.

  •

    Over 13 Riaz 0-1-4-0-4-wd-0

32-3 - Riaz gets his line too straight and Sarwan is able to find the fine-leg boundary with a glance off his pads. Riaz has again been preferred to Shoaib Akhtar (we might have already seen the last of the Rawalpindi Express given he is retiring at the end of the World Cup), Pakistan like the change of angle his left-arm over provides. So does Sarwan by the looks of it, driving through the covers in emphatic style for his second boundary of the over. That prompts Riaz to go round-the-wicket and send down a wild wide...

  •

    Over 12 Hafeez 1-wd-0-0-1-0-0

22-3 - The decision to open the bowling with Hafeez has worked out better than surely even Afridi could have expected. Getting so many overs out of a part-time spinner during the power play means Pakistan now have lots of options on how to use their bowlers over the remainder of the innings. Afridi himself, remember, is the highest wicket taker in the tournament.

  •

    Over 11 Riaz 0-0-0-0-1-0

The first bowling change of the day sees left-arm paceman Wahab Riaz brought into the attack. He keeps up the pressure with a series of full deliveries. There is just a single for Sarwan, stolen to mid-on from the over. So far, we have had 57 dot balls out of 66 deliveries. Power play batting at its best!

  • Power Play

No surprise at all as Pakistan opt to take the bowling power play straightaway. The fielding restrictions, therefore, remain in place for overs 11-15.

  •

    Over 10 Hafeez 0-0-0-0-0-0

18-3 - Chanderpaul blocks out another maiden, the third of the innings, to bring an end to the first power play. Hafeez tosses it up in an effort to tempt Chanderpaul but has no joy.

  • Question

Liaan wants to know what is the highest score by a number 10 batsman in World Cup history? Anyone have the answer...

  •

    Over 9 Gul 0-0-0-0-0-0

18-3 - There is a Test match feel to proceedings at the moment, Gul probing away for the breakthrough with Sarwan resolute in defence. Sarwan is so focused on defence that he misses out on a rare half-volley, drilling it straight at the cover fielder.

  • Michael Taylor

"I am very surprised that they dropped Russell, he has easily been one of their better players... As far as Darren Sammy playing a captain's innings, doing what? Bowling his dibbly doblies? Or scoring a hundred in 37 balls coming in at 8 or 9? Don't think so..."

  •

    Over 8 Hafeez 0-0-1-0-0-0

18-3 - Stumping appeal as Kamran Akmal whips off the bails (yes you are reading this right) but Sarwan's back foot never left the crease, a fact confirmed by the third umpire. Sarwan turns the strike over with a single on the leg side. There is another neat take from wicketkeeper Kamran later in the over...

  •

    Over 7 Gul 0-0-0-1-0-0

17-3 - Gul has his tail up and is steaming in for the kill. Sarwan gets a barely controlled outside edge down to third-man for a single. Must be a Guyanese thing as Chanderpaul also bangs the stump into the ground to take guard, fortunately he doesn't break the new bail. Chanderpaul is very watchful in defence, blocking out the last two balls of the over.

    Over 6 Hafeez W-0-0-0-W-0

16-3 - WICKET! Smith's weakness against spin is well known and once again proves his downfall. He seems surprised by a delivery that carries on with the arm (most of Hafeez's do), he misses with a defensive poke and is dispatched plumb lbw by umpire Steve Davis. No question of reviewing that - it was stone dead. WICKET! West Indies are in disarray as Darren Bravo comes and goes for a three-ball duck. Again he is pinned lbw by Hafeez's arm ball and again he seemed surprised by it. This time West Indies do ask for a review, which shows Bravo was struck low on the pad in front of middle stump and the ball would have gone on to just clip leg stump. The ruling on the field stands and Chanderpaul, not for the first time in his long career, makes his way to the middle with his side in trouble. Chanderpaul blocks out a double wicket maiden.

    Over 5 Gul 1-0-0-0-0

16-1 - Smith is onto any width straight away, this time cutting for a single. Sarwan looks nervous, a big swish outside off-stump results in a huge caught-behind appeal from all of Pakistan's slip cordon. Sarwan stands there smiling and shaking his head - and with good reason, there was clear daylight between bat and ball and Pakistan admit as much by declining to ask for a review.

  •

    Over 4 Hafeez 0-0-0-1-0-0

15-1 -Smith pinches a single with a drop-and-run to mid-on. Apparently Hafeez is known as The Professor in Pakistan's dressing room because he likes to analyse the game - "sometimes he is guilty of over analysing," adds Rameez Raja. Sarwan always marks his guard by hammering the bail into the ground with his bat handle - on this occasion he takes things a bit far and manages to break the bail, prompting a short delay as the third umpire brings out a new one.

  •

    Over 3 Gul 0-1-4-0-W-0

14-1 - Gul is getting the ball to jag back off the seam quite alarmingly - especially given the pitch is very bare. It doesn't worry Gayle, who responds by taking a couple of steps down and driving over the top of mid-off for his second boundary. Gul responds with a perfectly-pitched yorker but Gayle digs it out. WICKET! Gayle departs attempting to repeat his four from earlier in the over. This time he doesn't get enough loft on it and Afridi is able to move to his right at mid-off and take the catch with reverse hands. Gul is absoutely delighted. Ramnaresh Sarwan is promoted to number three and leaves his first delivery alone outside off-stump.

  •

    Over 2 Hafeez 0-0-wd-0-0-4-0

9-0 - Bit of a surprise from Afridi, who hands the new ball to part-time off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez. Chris Gayle makes a careful start, reaching well forward to block his first few deliveries. Hafeez throws in his doosra a couple of times but it is quite easy to spot. Gayle has seen enough and lifts the penultimate delivery of the over to the midwicket boundary - he picked it up from outside off-stump with consumate ease.

  •

    Over 1 Gul 4-0-0-0-0-0

4-0 - Short and wide to start from Umar Gul and Devon Smith rocks back and sends a cut racing away to the boundary. Gul, who has been in impressive form during recent games, soon finds his range and suddenly Smith looks all at sea - a huge lbw appeal is turned down by umpire Billy Bowden as the ball pitched just outside leg-stump and Smith is lucky not to edge the next ball, which cuts back off the seam and beats him on the inside edge.

    Anthems

David Rudder's "Rally Round the West Indies" is easily the best of the anthems at this World Cup - Youtube it if you've not heard it before. Anway, the formalities are out of the way, here we go...

  •

    Pitch

Pakistan played all their group matches in Sri Lanka, while West Indies have fond memories of the game they played here in Dhaka earlier in the tournament - they bowled out Bangladesh for 58 on the way to a nine-wicket victory. The pitch is slow and flat, not much in the way of grass - should be full of runs.

  •

    Form

Pakistan cruised through as Group A winners with five victories from their six matches, the only aberration coming against New Zealand. They ended Australia's 34-match winning streak at World Cups in their most recent outing. West Indies were also looking good before batting collapses led to defeats against England and India - and meant they only scraped through in fourth spot.

  •

    Team news

West Indies make three changes - Chris Gayle and Kemar Roach are fit to return and Shiv Chanderpaul earns a recall. That means no place for Kirk Edwards, Andre Russell and Sulieman Benn from the XI on duty during the defeat against India last time out - but Ravi Rampaul, who took a five-for in that match, keeps his spot. Pakistan have made just one alteration to their line-up, off-spinner Saeed Ajmal is preferred to left-armer Abdur Rehman. Shahid Afridi explained at the toss that it was due to the plethora of left-handers in West Indies' top order.
