S Africa vs Sri Lanka
SA won by an inns and 81 runs
That says everything about the gulf in class between these two sides at the moment. South Africa have been extremely skillful with the ball, and have shown a ruthless edge against opponents who had lesser skills and not enough backbone. Philander leads the Proteas from the field to a rousing ovation from the Centurion crowd. It's all over by tea on the third day, and it's difficult to see how Sri Lanka can turn things around in the nine days before the second Test. Getting paid might help.
Over 40 Philander W
150 all out - WICKET! And he does! Philander has ten wickets in the match, and four five-wicket hauls in his first six Test innings. Remarkable stuff. It's a great delivery to end it as well, angling across the left-handed Herath who gets a little tickle through to Boucher. That's the keeper's sixth catch of the innings.
Over 39 Kallis 0-0-1nb-0-4-0-0
150-9 - Kallis gets the opportunity to hit Dilhara Fernando in the ear. He can't, and instead Fernando whacks the first full ball back down the ground for four. That gives Philander the chance to wrap up a ten-for.
Over 38 Philander 2nb-0-6-4-0-W
145-9 - WICKET! Welegedera decides to take the Herath approach, and while it brings him ten runs in his eight-ball stay at the crease. He somehow drives over cover-point for six, then whips through backward square for four. But the aggression catches up with him when he tries to whack a short ball and gets a top edge straight up in the air. Philander calls for it, and takes the catch when it finally comes down.
Over 37 Tahir 0-0-0-W-0-0
133-8 - WICKET! Success for Tahir, and he's ecstatic as usual when he takes a wicket. It was a lovely delivery, dipping on Silva and turning to take the edge, and Kallis takes an easy catch at slip. Tahir thinks he has Welegedera out from the final ball as well, as Rod Tucker raises the finger, but the decision is overturned on review - that didn't even come close to hitting the glove before deflecting off the chest to short leg. Still two wickets to get then.
Over 36 Philander 0-0-4-0-7nb-0-0
133-7 - Philander replaces Steyn, and Herath picks the bouncer and cracks it perfectly through backward square leg for four. The ball raced away to the boundary. Philander responds well by beating the bat, but Herath picks up the length ball and cracks that over long-on for another six! Clearly he figures that the only thing that can add an air of respectability to Sri Lanka's day is a smashing counter-attack.
Over 35 Tahir 2-0-0-0-0-0
122-7 - Silva is willing to be more patient, and after driving down the ground for a couple, he defends for the rest of the over.
Over 34 Steyn 4-1-0-1-6-0
120-7 - Herath is looking to be aggressive here, and I suspect the approach won't allow him to last long. He cracks one through the covers for four without too much footwork, then heaves across the line and gets an inside edge to fine leg. He's going to get some runs for the approach though! Later in the over he smashes a back of a length delivery over long-on for six. Everyone is expecting the short one to follow, but Steyn follows up with the full slower ball, which Herath gets behind.
Over 33 Tahir 1-0-0-0-2-0
108-7 - Tahir is pretty wild here - one delivery is so wild that it pitches very short, spins and bounces so high that umpire Rod Tucker signals that that's one bouncer for the over. Silva reads the googly, and nudges it away behind square on the off side for two runs.
Over 32 Steyn 0-W-0-0-0-1lb
105-7 - WICKET! The edge is found, but this time it's thick enough to give Boucher a break. Instead Graeme Smith takes the catch at first slip and Perera has to go. There was just a bit of extra bounce there as the left-hander tried to hit through the off side. Rangana Herath is the new batsman, and he looks like he wants to smash everything. Eventually he gets a leg-bye to keep the strike.
Another ball change
Turns out the one the umpires picked out of the case wasn't the right size! There's some conjecture that it was a kiddies ball in fact. Anyway out comes the fourth umpire again, and Steyn finally has a ball he's happy with.
Over 31 Tahir 2-0-1-6-1-0
104-6 - Imran Tahir into the attack now. He starts with a rank long-hop that's cut away for a couple by Silva, who then shuffles inside the line to clip to leg for a single. Perera isn't about to stuff about, and he climbs into a length ball and hammers it over long-on for six. The ball lands in a puddle, so it has to be changed. Difficult start for the legspinner.
Over 30 Steyn 0-1-0-4-0-0
94-6 - Silva has his customary play and miss, but then pushes into the covers for a single. Perera then plays a delightful shot - Steyn came around the wicket, and the left-hander drove on the up through the covers for four. Possibly the shot of the innings so far. Time for a drinks break.
Over 29 Morkel 1-0-0-0-2-0
89-6 - Both batsmen manage to push through the covers off the back foot, which tells you that Morkel hasn't bowled full enough in this spell - the only wicket he has got would have hit the stumps, but not many other deliveries would have.
Over 28 Steyn 2-2-0-0-0-0
86-6 - This is a really fierce spell from Steyn, and you get the feeling that Philander's form is pushing the world's No. 1 Test bowler not to be outperformed. He beats the bat twice, but Perera does well to push the ball through the off side a couple of times.
Over 27 Morkel 4-0-0-0-0-0
82-6 - Silva finally gets proper bat on ball, and although it wasn't entirely convincing he manages to drive a full ball away behind square for four. The rest of the over is arguably a touch too short from Morkel.
Over 26 Steyn 0-0-1-0-0-1
78-6 - Steyn replaces Philander, and immediately beats Perera. Twice. The second one swings between bat and pad and misses off stump by a whisker. Perera looks back astonished that he hasn't been bowled. A single to fine leg gets him off strike, and allows Silva to play and miss again. Four slips and a gully in place, if he'd only find the edge.
Over 25 Morkel 0-3-0-0-0-0
76-6 - Philander has gone off the field, but he ran up the long flight of stairs that leads to the change rooms so maybe he just needed a toilet break. Morkel continues and seems to have found a yard of pace after that wicket. Perera drives nicely through the off side for three, and then Silva misses a couple of deliveries - again by some distance.
Over 24 Philander 0-0-0-0-0-3nb-0
73-6 - A quieter over from Philander. He beats the edge of Silva's bat a couple of times, but on both occasions the batsman misses by at least an inch. Finally he gets bat on ball and drives a no-ball through mid-off for a couple.
Over 23 Morkel 0-4-W-0-0-0
70-6 - WICKET! Morkel finally gets it right. He'd just been hit for another four by Samaraweera, but finally he bowls a fuller delivery that actually targets off stump, and the batsman gets an edge through to Boucher, who's been kept very busy today. The keeper already has five catches for the innings. Thisara Perera and Kaushal Silva are the new batsmen, and you wouldn't back them to stick around for too long.
Over 22 Philander 4-0-0-5nb-1-W-0
66-5 - A rare bad ball from Philander - short and a touch wide, and Samaraweera stands up nice and tall to drive it through the off side off the back foot for four. Then he oversteps and produces a similar delivery, and Samaraweera puts that away over backward point. Maybe Morkel's problem is contagious. WICKET! Philander's immune system kicks in and he has another wicket. This was fuller and closer to the stumps, Mathews had to play and got an edge through to Boucher as the ball swung away late. Victory is in sight for South Africa now.
Over 21 Morkel 0-0-0-5nb-4-0-1
56-4 - Morkel is bowling at around 140kph which isn't quite as fast as what he would like. Perhaps he's sacrificing a yard of pace just to get some more accuracy, but it's hardly working as another short and wide one sneaks through to the keeper. He then oversteps for the fourth time today as Samaraweera helps himself to back-to-back boundaries. First he gets a juicy half-volley on the pads which is flicked away, then a short and wide one gets the treatment on the off side. it could have so nearly been a third boundary, but some acrobatic fielding from Alviro Peterson - who's on for Rudolph - prevents the boundary.
Over 20 Philander 0-0-0-1-0-
46-4 - Samaraweera pulls out a rather risky shot as he tries to get off the strike by flicking one outside off to the leg side for a single. It's flies just wide of Amla who's under the helmet as the South Africans let out the 'oohs' and 'aahs'. Mathews is then beaten outside off with another seaming ball from Philander which ends the over. It's still a mountain to climb for Sri Lanka at 185 runs behind.
Over 19 Morkel 0-0-0-0-0-4
45-4 - APPEAL! Morkel goes up for an lbw shout, but it's hopelessly ambitious as he gets no support from behind the stumps. The replay shows it clearly came off the inside edge and into the groin area of Mathews. The vice-captain shrugs it off and ends the over by dragging one outside off and pulling it to mid-wicket for four. Looks like Morkel may have found some rhythm as he goes through the over without over-stepping - or perhaps without the umpire noticing as we've seen that happen before in this match.
Over 18 Philander 1-0-0-0-0-2
41-4 - Mathews is out there facing and gets the session underway with a single. He's doing really to be out there, the news is that his groin injury is pretty serious and he's in doubt for the remainder of the series.
Ready for session two
All and sundry are back out on the pitch. Vernon Philander has ball in hand, targeting his fourth five-wicket haul. Can he do it? We'll find out soon enough.
Six wickets to go
With South Africa dominating Sri Lanka in the morning session, they'll want to get into the tail as fast as possible and wrap this game up today. Thilan Samaraweera and an injured Angelo Mathews stand in their way, but there's very little batting thereafter. Sri Lanka need another 193 runs to make South Africa bat again, while it's just another six wickets needed for the hosts to claim victory.
Over 17 Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-0
38-4 - Kallis gets some good swing just outside the off stump here. Samaraweera manages to eke out a cut towards gully and it looks like it's going over Amla's head, but the bearded South African does brilliantly to pluck that out the air and save the single. Great session for South Africa as Kallis closes it with a maiden.
Over 16 Morkel 0-1nb-0-0-0-0-0
38-4 - Angelo Mathews comes out to bat and he is nursing a groin injury. He cannot have a runner, so hopefully he doesn't incur any further damage. Morkel bowls his customary no-ball, but ends the over with a sharp ball which jags back into Mathews. He takes it on the body and does well to keep his bat out the way. Sri Lanka are still 193 runs behind.
Over 15 Kallis 0-4-0-4-0-W
37-4 - Jayawardene strikes Kallis for two boundaries there to take himself to 9,999 Test runs. WICKET! They shoot off for a suicidal single as Jayawardene taps it and sets off. Kallis darts toward the ball and throws the stumps down. He's well out of his ground and the umpire doesn't even go upstairs for the replay.
Over 14 Morkel 1nb-0-0-0-0-4-0
29-3 - Another no-ball from Morkel as he oversteps for the second time in as many overs. He then hurls down another short and wide one which Samaraweera comfortably sends to the boundary.
Over 13 Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-0
24-3 - Kallis is at around 135kph. Not bad for a man going on 37 with 40 Test centuries behind his back. He's keeping the pressure up with a few probing deliveries outside off. Sri Lanka are yet to get a run off him today.
Over 12 Morkel 0-1nb-0-0-1-0-0
24-3 - Morne Morkel's confidence will be very low after his first innings return of 10 overs and none for 48. He hasn't started well with one straying down leg before bowling a no-ball. He follows it up with a short and wide one which Jayawardene slashes at, but makes no contact. Inconsistency is again dogging Morkel's bowling as he strays on the and gets tucked away for a single.
Over 11 Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-0
22-3 - Kallis is on first-change and immediately he gets some good bounce which causes problems for Samaraweera. After taking that blow to the head yesterday from Dilhara Fernando, Kallis looks fresh and ready to bag some wickets. He'll surely be begging his skipper for the ball when Dilhara does finally come to the crease.
Over 10 Philander 0-0-0-0-0-0
22-3 - Another solid maiden for Philander who now has 21 wickets midway through his third Test at an average of 12.23. And the way he's bowling, it's hardly surprising.
Over 9 Steyn 0-0-2-0-0-0
22-3 - Steyn's getting good pace at around 145kph and sends in a thunderous bouncer to greet Samaraweera. He's quick to get out the way and then whips one off the pads to go for two. Steyn's not happy with that and goes short again, just to remind the batsman he won't have it all his own way.
Over 8 Philander W-0-0-1-0-0
20-3 - WICKET! Philander strikes again. He is getting prodigious movement off the seam and this one goes across Sangakkara who had no option but to play at it. The edge is found and Boucher takes his third catch of the morning. Sri Lanka now facing the barrel as Thilan Samaraweera comes to the middle. He's beaten straight away by Philander. Samaraweera tucks one away off the pads to get off strike and they'll need plenty more of that.
Over 7 Steyn 4-0-0-0-2-0
19-2 - Jayawardene gets the edge but it's safely wide of slip and rolls away through third-man for four. He follows it up with a clip off the pads through mid-wicket for four. Incidentally, all of Rudolph, Amla, Prince, de Villiers, Boucher and Steyn were part of that match in Colombo, while only Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan and Fernando have survived for Sri Lanka.
Over 6 Philander 0-0-0-0-0-2
13-2 - Philander wasn't part of the South African side when Jayawardene and Sangakkara put on that marathon 624-run stand in Colombo in 2006, but Dale Steyn was and he will still have memories of that day. Good over by Philander nonetheless as he concedes just two off the final ball.
Over 5 Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-W
11-2 - WICKET! Steyn strikes this time as he gets Paranavitana to nick one to Boucher. it was a brilliant over from the world's best bowler as he probed outside that off stump with a teasing length. The left-hander was neither front nor back and just pushed his bat towards it. Sri Lanka are going to need something very special now from Jayawardene and Sangakkara.
Over 4 Philander 0-1nb-4-0-0-W-0
11-1 - WICKET! South Africa make the breakthrough as Dilshan edges the ball to Boucher. It's a low catch, but the wicketkeeper does a fantastic job to get his gloves under it. Kumar Sangakkara comes to the crease hoping to improve on his first innings duck. Philander greats him with line and length outside off. Maybe a play and miss, but we'll give Kumar the benefit and say he moved his bat away in time.
Over 3 Steyn 0-1-0-0-0-0
6-0 - Another sharp over from Steyn who his hitting the deck very hard. The pace seems to be a bit much for Paranavitana as he plays and misses again, but he does manage to get out of the way of the bouncer - unlike Jacques Kallis yesterday.
Over 2 Philander 1-0-0-0-0-0
5-0 - Dilshan gets off the mark straight away with a push into the covers, but at the other end Paranavitana is struggling to find the middle of the bat. APPEAL! Philander's on target again and there's a huge lbw appeal. Umpire Steve Davis raises the finger and Paranavitana thinks about it before going up for the review. It's overturned as the replay shows the ball pitched outside leg stump. Still a great over from Philander as he ends the over by beating the bat outside off. It really is great to see the UDRS being used so effectively thus far today.
Over 1 Steyn 0-0-4-0-0-0
4-0 - APPEAL! Steyn comes around the wicket and strikes Paranavitana on the pads. Umpire Rod Tucker says no and the South Africans aren't all that convinced, except fo Steyn who begs his captain Graeme Smith to take the referral. Smith gives the signal and there's a long period of tension before hawkeye eventually shows the umpire made the correct call. Coming so wide around the wicket Steyn had too much angle on that ball and it was missing leg stump - but not by much. Paranavitana shakes it off by pushing the fast bowler through the covers for four, but he now seems to struggling with an injury as we have a break in play. Remember he'll have no runner available, while Angelo Mathews is already injured. Big problems for Sri Lanka. After a lengthy calf massage, Paranavitana is back up and able to block out the rest of the over.
Steyn on a hat-trick
After picking up the final two wickets in Sri Lanka's first innings, Dale Steyn will be on a hat-trick when Dilshan and Paranavitana come out to bat.
Over 122 Welegedara 0-4-0-0-0-W
411 all out - Boucher gets another four-ball and it comes short and slow on leg stump. He rocks back and pulls it through mid-wicket with ease. WICKET! South Africa's innings finally comes to a close as Boucher tries to cut and get himself off the strike. The right-hander only manages to get and edge which Kaushal Silva snaps up with a dive to his right. Tahir is unbeaten at the other end on 29 and would perhaps feel like he missed out, he really appeared to be enjoying himself out there. Still, South Africa lead by 231 and it will take a massive effort from Sri Lanka to even make The Proteas bat again.
Over 121 Fernando 0-0-0-4-0-0
407-9 - Tahir is still doing a brilliant job here for his country as the partnership goes to 57. He gets a low full-toss outside off and smashes through for four. It's a new 10th-wicket partnership record at Centurion and The Proteas lead by 227 now.
Over 120 Welegedara 0-0-1-0-4-0
403-9 - Tahir played well last night as he provided good support for Boucher while also adding a few boundaries of his own. APPEAL! There's a shout for lbw as Boucher is struck on the pad without playing a shot, but the angle of the left-armer going over the wicket and across Boucher means there was enough doubt for umpire to turn down the appeal. Boucher ends the over bringing up the 400 with a classic glance as Welegedara strays down leg and concedes a boundary.
Over 119 Fernando 5nb-0-0-0-0-0-4
398-9 - Boucher is gifted the runs to go to his 35th Test fifty as Fernando oversteps with a half-volley on the pads. Boucher whips it away behind square and it's not the greatest of starts from Fernando who already bowled six no-balls yesterday. Boucher ends the over with a brilliant back foot punch through the covers for four as the field comes in to prevent the single. Tahir will be on strike for the next over.
Welcome to day three
