Friends Provident Trophy - Group C
The Brit Oval
Surrey 241-7 Innings Complete (M R Ramprakash 102) v Sussex 162 (C P Schofield 5-32)
Surrey beat Sussex by 79 runs (D/L Method)
Mark Ramprakash hit a century and Chris Schofield took five wickets as Surrey beat Sussex by 79 runs at the Oval.
The Sharks had already been assured of their quarter-final place in the FP Trophy and so opted to rest a number of players for their Group C clash, although the move failed to pay-off.
Rain restricted Surrey's innings to 39 overs, but that was enough time for Ramprakash to hit 102 off just 94 balls as the hosts made 241-7.
The Sussex response never got going as skipper and opener Ed Joyce went for a duck after just the fourth ball, and leg-spinner Schofield filled his boots with his 5-32 helping restrict the visitors to just 162 from 30 overs.
Surrey lost Scott Newman early on as a couple of showers forced the players off the field briefly and the match was reduced to 39 overs.
Ramps in charge
Veteran batsman Ramprakash was steering the ship though and put on 75 with Michael Brown before Brown was caught and bowled for 33 by Will Beer.
Skipper Usman Afzaal then joined Ramprakash and the duo added a further 89 runs before Corey Collymore took his only wicket of the match to send Afzaal back to the pavilion.
Ramprakash had made 102 before he was run out but a spritely 44-run partnership between Matt Spriegel and Grant Elliot fired Surrey up to a positive total of 241-7 from 39 overs.
Sussex skipper Joyce lasted just four balls before Andre Nel sent him packing before a run had been put on the scoreboard.
Schofield then took over and he ran the show with his leg spin as he skittled five Sussex batsmen out in just eight overs at the expense of only 32 runs.
The result was never going to affect the standings in the group with Surrey unable to qualify and Sussex already through, but resting some top players backfired on the visiting Sharks.
