W Indies vs Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe Win By 26 Runs
Awful start to Ottis Gibson's tenure as Windies coach but plenty of jubilation for the rejuvenated Zimbabwe set-up. Sammy and Benn' bolwing heroics are tossed out the windows, as as many as six Zimbo spin bowlers step up in celebration. Plenty of pride to go around for the struggling nation.
Over 20 S Masakadza 1-1wd-1-1-1-1-0
79-7 - Dropped! Long-off spills Ramdin but it doesn't really matter as the result is done and dusted with the boundary stopped. And that, as they say in the classics, is the ball game.
The Windies need 33 runs off six balls to avoid an upset. Fat chance that's going to happen.
Over 19 Chigumbura 0-4-1-0-1-1
73-7 - Can you believe it? A seamer into the attack. Not sure it's a wise move, as Ramdin welcomes pace through the air with four clubbed down the ground.
Over 18 Taylor 0-1-0-0-0-0
66-7 - Not one seamer in this innings, with Taylor the sixth spinner of the day. Wicket! Rampaul drives at a couple to no avail, surviving a stumping chance in the process. The Windies need 40 runs to win from 12 balls.
Over 17 Cremer 0-2-0-1-0-W
65-7 - Cremer completes his complement, with the Windies restricted to singles and a two when more than the odd boundary is the order of the day. Wicket! The departure of Sammy doesn't help their cause either, with the all-rounder beaten by flight, dancing down the track only to have the ball snipe through the gate and crash into the stumps. Next in is Rampaul.
Over 16 Lamb 1-W-1-1wd-1-1-1
62-6 - Wicket! Utseya lands an absolute blinder at midwicket, stopping Smith's slog-sweep dead in its tracks. Sensational catch on the dive to his right and next in is Sammy, hoping to add to his five-wicket haul earlier with a winning role with the bat.
Over 15 Matsikenyeri 6-1-1-1-1-0
56-5 - Matsikenyeri undoes all that Utseya, Price, Cremer and Lamb have strung together, offering Smith six heaved over midwicket with an ugly loosener. Windies need 50 runs off 30 balls to win from here on in.
Over 14 Lamb 1-1-0-0-0-0
46-5 - Ramdin insists on the cut shot but there is far too much turn on the go for him to get the stroke away. He'd be much better off looking too nudge runs through mid-on.
Over 13 Cremer 0-1-1-1-1-0
44-5 - High hopes form bowler and 'keeper, going up for an lbw shout that probably inolved a bit of bat and was pitched well outside the off-stump anyway.
Over 12 Lamb W-0-0-0-0-1
40-5 - Wicket! Dropped on 16 and then almost run out a couple of minutes later, Chanderpaul is all out of reprieve. Lamb beats him with an 'arm' ball of sorts, with some slight spin in striking the left-hander on the pads dead in front of off- and middle-stump. Up goes the finger, off goes the veteran and in comes Smith. Cremer still breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Over 11 Cremer 0-0-0-1-1-0
39-4 - Cremer turning it square, with the Windies forced to scamper singles. One such chance of the arm almost brings the demise of Chanderpaul, who beats the direct-hit by a whisker or three.
Over 10 Lamb 2-0-1-0-1wd-0-1
37-4 - More spin, that of Lamb's right-arm variety. He so very nearly strikes with an opening loosener, as Chanderpaul top edges a full toss to long-on. Dropped! It hangs under Cremer for ages, only to spill from the plighted fielder's hands. That could have been a killer blow for the Windies. Plenty of turn for Lamb. Too much in fact, as a wide spins down the leg-side. The Zimbos were 30 for four at this stage of their knock.
Over 9 Cremer 1-1wd-W-W-0-0-0
32-4 - Leg-spin into the attack, which is effectively off-spin to left-armer Chanderpaul, who nurdles a single through square-leg. Cremer will prefer angling the ball away from right-handed Pollard. Wicket! The IPL recruit and Windies big-hitter fancies a fat, early dip, missing his attempted drive over the bowler's head to have his stumps cleaned up. Silly shot, with the Windies in a spot of bother in pursuit of a modest target now. Bravo comes to the crease, pivots to swipe across the line first ball up and pays the price. Wicket! He is struck on the pads dead in front and up goes the finger immediately. Next in is Ramdin, in need of a captain's knock of note. The wrong'un almost proves too much for Gayle's fill-in to handle, but he gets his bat down in time.
Over 8 Price 0-4wd-0-0-1-0-1
30-2 - Price's mid-stride hop and a skip flummoxes only himself, as unwelcome (for Zimbabwe) wides slip down the leg-side. Price's four-over complement is done for the day.
Over 7 Utseya 0-2-0-1-0-W
24-2 - Plenty of flight from the spinner, but Shiv won't be attempted to go over the top of cover. Lamb fluffs his second error of the day, offering the left-hander two through square-leg that should've been just one. Wicket! Fletcher reckons he has an early six, but it turns out that his hefty slog-sweep can't carry the fence as the midwicket fielder welcomes a simple catch. Next in is Pollard.
Over 6 Price 0-0-0-1-0-W
21-1 - The ball grips and turns, as Chanderpaul almost plugs a return catch to Price, but the ball drops short. Then, out comes the reverse-sweep to no avail as the stalwart West Indian feels the pressure a touch. Wicket! The pressure tolls on Barath though, as the young right-hander dances down the track, misses his attempted loft drive and has his stumps cleaned up. Taibu would have had plenty of time to orchestrate the stumping, anway. Next in is Fletcher.
Over 5 Utseya 0-1-0-1wd-0-1-0
20-0 - Chanderpaul pads up but there is no way this side of the equator the umpire is going to give out a delivery that pitched outside the off-stump and was certainly not sliding in.
Over 4 Price 0-4-1-0-4-2
17-0 - Barath welcomes a touch too much width from Price, lacing four through point and following that up with a single skewed to deep square-leg on the hack. Chanderpaul matches his batting partner's boundary, scooping four more over the on-side.
Over 3 Utseya 0-0-0-2-0-0
6-0 - Chanderpaul eventually finds some handy placement beyond mid-off for two, with plenty of close-in fielders raising the pressure levels. Taibu is as quick as a flash behind the stumps, whipping off the bails in the wake of Chanderpaul's missed sweep and foot dragged outside the crease. Televsion upon television replay play out, revealing the Windies star has scratched his foot back at the last milli-second.
Over 2 Price 0-0-0-0-0-0
4-0 - Left-arm turner Price leads the way with an approach laced with flight and guile across a two-paced pitch. Barath struggles, almost perishing to the leading edge and then more of the same toward backward point. Maiden. Pressure on the Windies, sort of.
Over 1 Utseya 1-1-wd-0-0-0-1
4-0 - Captain and first-choice spinner, Utseya looks to replicate Benn's heroics earlier. Plenty of turn on offer across this Queens Park Oval deck. Decent first burst from the visiting bowler, with the Windies duo struggling to puncture the gaps on offer.
All and sundry back out in the middle. Chanderpaul and Twenty20 International debutant Barath to open the batting.
Zimbabwe All Out For 105
All Windies today, with Benn doing the damage up front before Sammy cleaned up the rest. Hamilton stuck to his defiant guns, while Chigumbura enjoyed a bit of a belated heave. Stick around for the brief, entertaining chase. Meanwhile, let's hear your thoughts on proceedings thus far. Mail me at email@example.com.
Over 19.5 Sammy 6-W-0-W-1wd-W
105-10 - Wicket! Chigumbura goes high and hard over long-off for six but then clubs one straight to Barath at cover. Wicket! Next in is Shingirai, perishing on the long-on fence in the quest for big, quick runs. Wicket! Last man in is Price, who watches from the non-striker's end as his captain's lack of defence offers Sammy his five-for. Stumps cleaned up for the umpteenth time today.
Over 19 Rampaul 4-3nb-1nb-1-1-5nb-6-1-W
98-7 - Chigumbura spanks Rampaul's rank full bunger to the midwicket fence, then welcoming a couple of no-balls and subsequent free-hits to the best of his willow-wielding ability. The third no-ball of the over(!) fetches four, as Chigumbura makes sure to punish the ugly overstep. The fourth full toss of the over doesn't help Rampaul's cause either, as Chigumbura cranks six over midwicket. Wicket! Cremer tries to get in on the big-hitting act, but can't manage as much as Rampaul carenes through his cross-bat swip to clean up middle- and leg-stump. Next in is captain Utseya. 22 runs off the elongated over. Good, belated going for the Zimbos.
Over 18 Sammy 0-1-1-W-1-1
76-6 - Wicket! Long-on and long-off clean up respective straight drives from Hamilton and Elton, after which the former's latest swipe across the line amounts to nothing more than a faint edge. Ramdin hangs on and off goes the thwarted half-centurion. Cremer is the new man in.
Over 17 Roach 1-1-0-1-0-2
72-5 - Pace ace Roach resumes from a new end for his final over of the day, digging in a yorker to kick off his ultimate burst. Masakadza does well to keep it out. The least he can do is make sure he lasts the full 20 overs from here on in.
Over 16 Sammy 1-1-1-1-1-1
67-5 - Mazakadza manages to sweep the seamer(!), while Chigumbura can't ping the gap between long-on and midwicket. Plenty of swipes through the on-side today, but poor placement hasn't brought enough boundaries.
Over 15 Pollard 0-1wd-1-1wd-1-1-4-0
61-5 - Pollard's concentration is out the window, as he coughs up a couple of leg-side wides. Ramdin, meanwhile, puts in the dive but can't get to Masakadza's latest edge as four lucky runs spoon through third man.
Over 14 Sammy 0-6-1-1-1-W
51-5 - Seamer Sammy into the attack, getting away with a marginal slide down the leg-side but then copping a six over Cow Corner courtesy Masakadza, who has middled his first one of plenty. Wicket! Lamb perishes to the slowest of slower deliveries. Trying to run it down to third man, he misses it entirely and has his middle-stump pegged back. Next in is Chigumbura, quite capable of a few hefty blows.
Over 13 Pollard 1-0-1-1-1-1
42-4 - Masakadza's latest device is to hop across the stumps in an attempt to wallop the ball through the on-side. At least the running between the wickets is decent, as the duo scamper a single to short third man.
Over 12 Rampaul 0-1-0-1lb-0-0
37-4 - Plenty of bounce in this track, as Lamb fails to get on top of an attempted dab down to third man, managing as much at the second attempt.
Over 11 Pollard 1-0-1-1wd-0-1-1
35-4 - Pollard mixes his variety up even more, offering a hop to the left mid-delivery stride. The belated angle almost gets the better of the right-hander, who gets in some tardy defence at last gasp. Masakadza, again, is at his horrible stroke play. He dances down the track, offers a very ugly swing across the line, misses and looks the fool for it.
Over 10 Rampaul 0-0-4-0-1lb-0
30-4 - I've penned Chigumbura down as the next man in, as Masakadza is pretty much a walking wicket right now. However, he finally manages to middle one for a four thumped over the bowler's head. ZImbabwe really gunning at at three runs to the over here. Not.
Over 9 Pollard 1-0-0-2-0-1
25-4 - A master at the slower ball and scrambled seam, Pollard enters the attack with his mixed bag of varied pace and length. Masakadza, meanwhile, continues to hack his way through an ugly innings. An edge brings him two, while a swing across the line brings him a blow to the stomach.
Over 8 Rampaul 0-0-4lb-0-0-1
21-4 - Rampaul looks to knock Lamb's block off with his first delivery, but then errs down the leg-side for four extras off the right-hander's thigh pad. There is a slip in place, but he is stationed a metre or two too far back to hang onto an edge offered by Lamb.
Over 7 Benn 0-1-1-0-1-0
16-4 - Taibu couldn't manage as much, but Lamb and Masakadza make do with the sweep shot. Benn's four-over complement is over. Four wickets for six runs across a mere 24 deliveries for him.
Over 6 Roach 1-1-0-0-0-0
13-4 - Lo and behold, the Zimbos make it through an entire over without losing a wicket. This despite Masakadza's finest attempt to hole out on the fence. He is throwing the kitchen sink at everything, yet connecting very little.
Over 5 Benn 0-3-W-0-0-0
11-4 - Masakadza looks to cut a delivery that is far too close to his body to do so, almost having his off-stump pegged back. Backward point then misses the thick edge, as the opener rides his luck for three runs. Wicket! Benn bags his fourth scalp of the day with ease, as Taylor fails to pick the 'arm' ball. MIddle- and off-stump duly rattled. Next in is Hampshire performer Lamb. Amazing start for the Windies.
Over 4 Roach 0-0-2-4-1nb-0-1
8-3 - Masakadza manages to ease the pressure somewhat, prodding two through mid-on and then lavishing four over cover. Roach then manages a wicket, almost, cleaning up the right-hander's stumps off a no-ball. Masakadza lives to tell the tail but misses out on the subsequent free-hit with a wild swipe across the line. He wanted that over midwicket, but alas.
Over 3 Benn 0-W-0-W-0-0
0-3 - Wicket! Intent on playing one shot and one shot only to the spinner, Taibu perishes to that one and only shot. It's the sweep, which he doesn't connect yet again, and is struck on the front pad in line with the stumps well enough for the finger to be raised. Matsikenyeri is the new man in. Wicket! He lasts all of two balls, offering Ramdin the faintest of edges off the back foot. Disaster for the tourists. Taylor in now. Double-wicket maiden for Benn. Not a run yet for the visitors.
Over 2 Roach 0-0-0-0-0-0
0-1 - Spin at the other end, but out-and-out pace from this side, as Roach carenes through an over to Masakadza, who endures a slew of unhealthy swipes outside the off-stump. Zimbos yet to score a run 12 balls into their innings.
Over 1 Benn W-0-0-0-0-0
0-1 - Wicket! Spin to open the bowling, as the lanky left-armer strikes with the first delivery of the match. Sibanda is totally rushed for pace, with the ball zipping through the gap between bat and pad and crashing into the stumps. Off he goes and in comes Taibu, who sees off the wicket-maiden with a host of hopeful sweep shots.
Players and umpires are on the field. Masakadza and Sibanda to open the batting.
