Lancashire duo slice up Pears

Lightning post their highest total in the 40-over competition

Last Updated: 27/08/12 6:37pm

Tom Smith: hit eight fours and 10 sixes

Stephen Moore and Tom Smith both hit tons for Lancashire but rain had the last word in their Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture against Worcestershire.

The Lightning - already certain of a place in the semi-finals of the competition - smashed their way to 324-4 in a match reduced to 37 overs-per-side.

However the Pears never got the chance to try and chase down such a mammoth score, with the match being abandoned at New Road before the hosts had faced a ball.

At least Moore and Smith had given the spectators something to watch before the heavens opened, the pair sharing a stand of 150 for the first wicket.

Record

Smith marked his return from a five-week injury lay-off by racing to three figures from a mere 44 balls, hitting eight fours and 10 sixes in the process.

His whirlwind innings equals the fifth fastest in List A matches in the world and

places him equal third in domestic cricket. Jack Shantry eventually ended the all-rounder's onslaught, bowling him for 106.

Moore, who had been content to stay in the shadows, smoothly reached his century from 96 balls, on the way becoming the second batsman to go past 500 runs in this season's competition.

The former Worcestershire batsman hit 11 fours and two sixes before he was caught at deep mid-wicket for 113 after sharing in a another century stand, this time putting on 142 with Steven Croft, who made 67 from 52 balls.

Brett D'Oliveira weathered the storm with some credit, bowling his eight overs for 37, and Nick Harrison picked up a couple of consolation wickets, though his seven overs cost the small matter of 83 runs.

Lancashire comfortably registered their highest total in the 40-over competition. Both sides take a point each from the abandoned contest.
