Usain Bolt has revealed that he tore a hamstring during last week's relay final at the World Athletics Championships and requires three months of rehabilitation.

He took to Twitter to explain why he was forced to pull up on the final leg of the 4x100m in London.

The Jamaican team appeared to be heading towards a bronze medal, behind Great Britain and United States, when Bolt grimaced and withdrew.

Speculation followed that he had pulled up in the anchor leg because he was too far behind to win the race.

But Bolt, accompanied by a photograph of an x-ray of the injury to his left hamstring, explained that he would never cheat his fans.

The eight-time Olympic gold medallist said: "Sadly I have a tear of the proximal myotendineous junction of biceps femoris in my left hamstring with partial retraction. Three months of rehab.

"I don't usually release my medical report to the public but sadly I have sat and listened to people questioning if I was really injured.

"I have never been one to cheat my fans in any way and my entire desire at the championship was run one last time for my fans.

"Thanks for the continued support my fans and I rest, heal and move onto the next chapter of my life."

The posts were deleted shortly after they had been posted.

Bolt, who turns 31 on August 21, had been three metres behind the eventual gold and silver medallists, as he took on the last leg of the relay, only to pull up sharply and fall to the ground.

During his career, Bolt won 19 global championship golds between 2008 and 2016.
