Britain's Adam Gemili sprinted to gold in the men’s 200 metres at the European Championships to win the first major international title of his senior career.
The 20-year-old, who took two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games recently, went under 20 seconds for the second time despite having to deal with rain and a headwind in Zurich.
Much was expected of Gemili after he qualified quickest for the final and he did not disappoint, with his 19.98 seconds run the fastest time by a European this year. Gemili also became the first Briton ever to twice go under 20 seconds.
He was well ahead coming off the bend and kept the challenge of France’s Christophe Lemaitre firmly at bay down the home straight. Ukraine’s Serhiy Smelyk completed the podium.
"It is a great stepping stone. Obviously I got two silvers at the Commonwealths, but that's my first senior gold medal," Gemili said.
"I get to stand on top of the podium and listen to the national anthem, which is something I've only dreamt about doing like playing for England as a footballer.
"Hopefully this gives me a good platform to go out there and take it to the World Championships (next year)."
Jodie Williams produced a strong finish to grab silver in the women's 200m, setting a new personal best of 22.46s as Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers surged clear to complete the sprint double.
