Mayes, along with an England Netball panel, will need to select a 12-strong squad for the games in Glasgow this summer, where they face the likes of New Zealand and Australia - the two countries ranked higher than her own side in the world.
Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports Netball, Mayes says she has been impressed with the quality of play in this season's domestic ZEO Netball Superleague and insists she will select her team on form.
Mayes said: "I've always said I want to have a headache in terms of Commonwealth Games selection.
"They need to make my job hard if we're really serious about having the best England side there has ever been and building the legacy. It's been really impressive throughout the season so far to see some real youngsters put their best foot forward.
"A lot of people have spoken about Helen Housby in terms of coming through the National Academy ranks; she did a fantastic job for our U19's last year if you at her stats and she's really demonstrating that on a week-to-week basis.
"I also think that if you look around the country there are stars stepping up in all the team and I think Celtic Dragons are bringing something really different ; Northumbria are in terms of the imports they've had and the Northern Ireland players - they've built strength and week in week out they're putting their best foot forward.
"It's a really exciting time but very much a headache for me which is great.
"At the end of the day the best 12 players will go, the most in-form players will go and that's important and exciting me as head coach. At the end of the day I'm only one vote around that panel but it's exciting to see these people coming through and all credit to what the franchises are doing in terms of bringing on those youngsters and our National Academy in terms of pushing them through."
