Lucy Garner was part of the team helping Lizzie Armitstead win World gold in the US, while Sam Oldham suffered an injury in London as the Sky Academy Sports Scholars continued their battle to make Rio.

It has been an eventful and emotional few days for some of the Academy Scholars as the focus starts building towards qualifying for next year's Olympics in Brazil.

Rising cycling star Garner has had a whirlwind couple of weeks. The 21-year-old from Leicester, currently based in the Netherlands, recently signed a two-year contract with Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling and capped off an astonishing month with an encouraging show in the United States.

The Great Britain squad provided a youthful support team and Armitstead took full advantage to storm to gold in a thrilling women's road race at the Road Cycling World Championships in Richmond, Virginia.

It was a gruelling 130km race and Garner was delighted to be part of the team alongside Alice Barnes, Molly Weaver, Jessie Walker and Hayley Simmonds to help Armitstead to glory.

Garner said: "What a feeling. To work with these amazing girls and to be a part of this World Championship win is surreal. No one deserved it more.

"The race went really well. My job was to help in the first part of the race, any attacks going and to try and help Lizzie save as much energy as possible.

"With two laps to go, the race went away but I was happy with how I rode and that I could help Lizzie early on. It was just great being part of such an amazing win. It was a special moment and an experience I won't forget."

There was less to cheer about for gymnast Sam Oldham who was competing at the London Open in Essex in the first of three big events that act as a trial for October's World Championships in Glasgow.

The 22-year-old from Nottingham, who has only just overcome a recent minor injury niggle, said: "That was a tough one. It can be summed up with the famous Mike Tyson quote: 'Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face'.

"I felt in good shape heading into the competition and the weeks of training had been good. Unfortunately I had to pull out of the competition due to picking up an injury on my first apparatus, the floor.

"I've been scanned and assessed by my GB medical team and the good news is it's just a minor grade one muscle injury to a small muscle that runs alongside my Achilles.

"Obviously it's frustrating but I'm expected to be fully recovered by early next week which is great news.

"Next up it's the final World Championships trial against Spain at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre where I'll do everything I can to try to secure a place on that team for Glasgow."
