How do you create the perfect wave?
It's something surfing legend Kelly Slater has been working on for most of his life.
This weekend, the most successful pro surfer of all time is digging out his board to compete in front of 4,000 fans in a small patch of California's Central Valley, some 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The Surf Ranch relies on a unique system of hydrofoils that make the artificial waves rise up over the rectangular pool.
At the touch of a button, the waves can be adjusted to suit beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers and can reach up to 6.5 feet.
The hydrofoils run down a track with the help of more than 150 truck tires and at around 18 miles per hour.
