Dani Pedrosa will be on pole for Sunday’s MotoGP race in Barcelona, where runaway championship leader Marc Marquez slid off his machine towards the end of the qualifying session.
Marquez lost control of his Honda on Turn One and will have to start his home race at Catalunya third on the grid - but still on the front row.
Jorge Lorenzo makes up a Spanish top three on the front row, just 0.115 of a second adrift of Pedrosa who clocked one minute, 40.985 seconds around the circuit.
Valentino Rossi was fifth fastest on a Yamaha, while Briton Bradley Smith starts on the third row of the grid after posting the eighth quickest time.
Smith was 0.506s slower than Pedrosa who is seeking his first victory since last autumn.
The 23-year-old from Oxford had posted the fastest time during Friday’s second free practice session.
Marquez, the reigning world champion, has won all six races so far during 2014 and leads the championship table by a massive 53 points from Rossi who in turn is a single point clear of Pedrosa.
Last year’s race in Catalunya was won by Lorenzo from Pedrosa and Marquez.
