Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa claimed pole position for the San Marino MotoGP at Misano after being fastest in qualifying on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Spaniard set a quickest lap of 1 minute 33.857 seconds to edge out compatriot and championship rival Jorge Lorenzo by just 0.018s.
British rider Cal Crutchlow will start from third spot as he finished 0.144 off the pace, while Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista completed the top five.
Pedrosa, who trails Lorenzo by 13 points in the title standings, led the way early in the session but was only able to make sure of top spot in the dying seconds.
Crutchlow had been at the top of the timesheets with just moments to go but first Lorenzo and then Pedrosa set better times.
Valentino Rossi equalled his best qualifying performance of the season by claiming sixth place in what is set to be his final race for Ducati on Italian soil.
Jonathan Rea, who is standing in for injured reigning world champion Casey Stoner, posted the ninth fastest time in qualifying.
