In tricky conditions the Northern Irishman found grip that the others couldn't to beat MG's Jason Plato by over six tenths of a second.
"I think we've had the pace in the car all day in wet and dry and it was just about timing," Turkington told Sky Sports.
"I was on my best tyres at the best time and maybe a bit of bravery helped as it had started to rain on those last few laps, but the ambient temperature is good today so the grip was there even though it was spitting and I decided to take a chance and push in the slightly damp conditions. I'd prefer to take a chance and be P1 than stay safe in P3. The car has been fantastic in wet and dry conditions so all credit to the eBay guys."
Behind Turkington and Plato was Gordon Shedden for Honda who will hope to take advantage of the opportunity to close on Drivers' Championship leader Andrew Jordan who was only 13th quickest.
The session was twice red flagged - the second time bringing qualifying to an early conclusion - after two cars went into the wall at Druids. Adam Morgan's Mercedes was the first midway through the session, before Jack Clarke's Ford Focus suffered substantial front end damage at the same corner in the final minute.
