Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala leads Kris Meeke of Britain at the Rally of Portugal after Friday's action was disrupted by a forest fire.
Volkswagen driver Latvala holds an 11 second cushion over Meeke, the in-form Citroen DS3 driver who is aiming to follow up on his win last time out in Argentina.
"Overall a good day," Latvala said on the WRC website. "Step by step I have been increasing my speed. I have to be satisfied with what we've done here."
A second Volkswagen of Andres Mikkelsen lies third, 16 seconds off the pace, with reigning world champion Sebastien Ogier only sixth.
With fire ablaze in the region the second stage had to be abandoned and the third stage cancelled altogether.
Saturday's second day continues with special stages in the region to the east of Porto.
