Wales top their group in the Netball World Cup with a close victory over Uganda.

Wales have finished top of Pool D at the Netball World Cup after a thrilling 49-47 win over Uganda in Sydney.

Heading into the last quarter, Wales trailed 39-35 but they produced a dramatic late comeback to continue their impressive start to the tournament.

Both teams entered the match with unbeaten records, although Uganda boasted the better goal difference, with star shooter Peace Proscovia holding the second highest scoring tally of the competition.

All eyes were on Loughborough Lightning’s Proscovia as she came up against the miserly Welsh keeper Rosanna Pretorius, with both sides exchanging goals in a hectic opener.

At the other end, Chelsea Lewis (12-15) was displaying her accuracy, but She Cranes’ goal keeper Florence Nanyonga produced a flashy intercept as Uganda levelled at 15-15.

Into the second quarter, Wales were showing their attacking threat, with wing attack Bethan Dyke and centre Kyra Jones offering inviting passes into the shooting circle.

Proscovia’s pinpoint shots kept Uganda in touching distance and they trailed 27-26 at half-time.

Wales introduced Nichola James at centre and Lateisha Kidner in goal defence for the second half, while Uganda brought on Jescan Achan at wing defence as both teams tried to take command of a closely contested match.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock until a defensive intercept from the She Cranes’ Nanyonga allowed them to pull 39-35 ahead at the end of the third quarter.

But Wales came on strong in the closing stages, piling on a string of unanswered points, and were still attacking as the clock ticked down.
