Tom Daley will miss this year's European Championships and take a break from competitive diving for the rest of 2018, British Swimming has announced.

Daley, who turns 24 this month, pulled out of individual competition at last month's Commonwealth Games with a hip injury but won synchronised 10m platform gold with Dan Goodfellow.

The world champion and two-time Olympic bronze medallist also suffered a series of concussions earlier this year.

Daley will miss August's European Championships in Scotland but says he will return to action in 2019, with his sights set on an elusive gold medal at his fourth Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

He and husband Dustin Lance Black, the Hollywood screenwriter, are expecting a baby next month.

He said: "Diving is a huge part of my life and I have dedicated the last 15 years to it.

"I want to keep performing at the highest level for myself, my family and my fans, but in order to do that I need to take some time to recover.

"I'll be using the rest of the year to spend time with my husband and new baby and work on projects close to my heart.

"I am sure this will give me the time I need to be in a position to compete at my best going into the next Olympics."
