A number of changes have been approved for the 2017/18 NFL season, including the shortening of overtime from 15 to 10 minutes.

This change has been introduced with the aim of improving player safety, with the proposal initially presented to NFL owners at the Annual League Meeting in March.

The owners have agreed for overtime to be shortened during preseason and the regular season.

Other changes approved at the Spring League Meeting include not penalising most player celebrations. According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the league is "relaxing rules on celebrations to allow players more room to have a fun after they make big plays."

Also, instead of reducing from 90 to 75 players, there will only be one deadline that will cut each roster down to 53 players.

Finally, two players per season will now be eligible to return to practice if they have been on IR for at least six weeks. Currently it is just one.

According to nfl.com: "The move gives teams greater roster flexibility and a chance to have their best players on the field for important late-season games."
