Team GB's Olympic heroes returned to the country to a rousing reception after the best Games performance for a century.

Chris Hoy's cycling ability grabbed him three gold medals and a place in history as the best GB Olympian for a century, while Rebecca Adlington also made history as she bagged two swimming golds.

Fourth place in the medals table, beating Australia and Germany in the process, was a fantastic achievement, and he's what the top stars had to say upon their return.

"Everybody seems just so happy to see us. We're beginning to understand now that the whole nation has been following it."
Triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy.

"Obviously I had my own expectations, but it wasn't two gold medals at all. It's just been a fantastic week."
Swimmer Rebecca Adlington, who won both the 800m and 400m freestyle.

"London is the sporting capital of the world. I say to the Chinese and I say to the world: ping pong is coming home."
London Mayor Boris Johnson at the closing ceremony.

"For all of us it's been a massive inspiration; now looking forward to 2012, and hopefully the success the whole team has had can get the whole nation behind the Games in London - so we're looking forward to it."
Britain's best ever sailor, and three-time gold medallist Ben Ainslie.

"I just feel proud to come from there let alone have something named after me."
Adlington after finding out the Yates' Bar in her home town of Mansfield is to be renamed The Adlington Arms in her honour - the pool she trains in will also be dedicated to her.

"It was a really great set-up for us. We had a really nice satellite village and I was just incredibly proud to be sailing with Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson and standing on the podium was the best experience anyone can imagine."
Sailing gold medallist Sarah Webb - one of the 'three blondes in a boat'.

"I think the winning the race part has sunk in. As a cyclist you think afterwards 'tactically what I did, was it right and what could I have done better?'

"But I don't think being an Olympic champion has sunk in yet."
Road cyclist Nicole Cooke won GB's first gold in dramatic style.

"I think all of us would agree that was a phenomenal Olympic Games. I'm sure when we all got on to the plane to go to Beijing we had incredibly high expectations of what Beijing would deliver and I think they did that, they did more than that."
Rowing's coxless fours gold medal winner Steve Williams.

"I can't wait to have a burger and chips."
That girl Adlington again.

"It was crazy meeting David Beckham and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, it was just an unbelievable night and it finished off what's been an incredible two weeks for me and for the whole team. It's one night I'll remember for the rest of my life."
Hoy after carrying the GB flag at the closing ceremony.
