The Great Britain team will head into the final phase of the three-day eventing in the bronze medal position after impressing in the cross-country on Monday.

Having disappointed in the dressage, William Fox-Pitt had the fastest ride for Team GB in Hong Kong.

His score now counts - the top three riders for each nation make up the overall team points - but it is the impressive all-round displays of Tina Cook and Mary King that have propelled Britain into medal contention.

Both had clear rounds on Monday, although like all the riders, they picked up time penalties on a tight, twisting course, made tougher by the recent rain.

Fox-Pitt and horse Parkmore Ed recorded the second-fastest time of the day with eight minutes and 25 seconds.

"I'm lucky that I am very fit, I work hard and even I'm tired after that," said the 39-year-old. "The course comes at you thick and fast.

"He has got very good rhythm. He is a great striding horse and a super jumper.

"He was fabulous and though he may not be the fastest in the world he put his best foot forward today."

Fox-Pitt is now 14th in the individual standings, but King is tied for fifth with Cook in 10th.

Germany's Hinrich Romeike is in the gold-medal spot, just ahead of team-mate Ingrid Klimke.

It is therefore no surprise to see that Germany head the team rankings going into the final day, with Australia slipping back to the silver position.
