Canada's Eric Lamaze struck gold in the individual show jumping event after a thrilling second jump-off.

An initial jump-off for the gold ended up with Lamaze and his horse Hickstead being level with Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, forcing a second run against the clock.

This time the Canadian came out on top and he landed the gold, leaving Bengtsson with the silver while American Beezie Madden won another play-off for bronze.

Lamaze and Bengtsson, riding Ninja, were among 10 riders with clean rides in the first of two rounds but the only ones clean in the second round. Bengtsson knocked one rail down in the jump-off, while Lamaze, the final rider, went clean to win the gold.

Madden also went clean in the first round but knocked down a rail in the second. She jumped off against six other four-faulters, going clean in the jump-off to beat Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum of Germany by just a tenth of a second.
