Germany's world champion gymnast Fabian Hambuechen is confident he can take Olympic gold after using the experience of taking part in the Games in Athens as a teenager.

Hambuechen was Germany's youngest athlete in Athens as he came seventh in the horizontal bar and eighth in the team competition as a 16-year-old.

He has used that experience well, and has since landed five World Championship medals, including a gold on his favourite horizontal bars.

Germany's athlete of the year in 2007 is coached by his father Wolfgang, who is extremely keen on his son's chances of landing gold - and the man himself is also in confident mood.

"If I come through in the horizontal bar without making a mistake, I will be hard to beat," Hambuechen told Bild.

Hambuechen admits that his relationship with coach and father Wolfgang can become strained at times as the pressure of the situation mounts, but he has no thoughts whatsoever of making a change.

"There are days when we argue and once a month we normally have a total crash," he admitted.

"He is an absolute person of authority for me. He will definitely be my coach until my career finishes."

Entering his second Olympics at just 20, Hambuechen has his sights set on a lengthy career of medal-winning at the Games.

"My goal is to participate in four Olympic Games," he said.

"In 2004 in Athens I was the youngest at 16, perhaps I will be the oldest in 2016."
