Peterborough teenager Louis Smith won Britain's first gymnastics medal for 80 years with an unexpected bronze in the pommel horse final.
The 19-year-old from Peterborough posted a score of 15.725 to leap ahead of all but one of the five competitors who had gone before him.
However, last man Filip Ude from Croatia finished on the same score but had fewer deductions on countback for artistic merit so was awarded silver.
China's three-time reigning world champion Xiao Qin claimed gold with a score of 15.875.
Smith's bronze is the first ever by a British male in the gymnasium, and the youngster was as surprised as everybody else.
"It's crazy. It makes all those 14 years of hard work worth it," said the Commonwealth champion. "Right now it is just 'Wow', what's going on?' I think I'll appreciate it in a couple of hours.
"So many people have worked hard with me over the years and I'm just glad I have been able to do them proud as well, not just myself."
